Jennifer Bornstein opens 6.30 to 8.30pm Thursday the 20th of January 2011 until 5/3/11 11am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday Jennifer Bornsteins fourth solo show at greengrassi comprises 15 etchings and a 16mm film. The etchings are based on a selection of images made from Bornsteins collection of archival photographic sources, mainly consisting of photos from Sam Wagstaff Jr. Bornstein invited people she knew and hired strangers from an online forum to re-create the poses, photographed them and made etchings from these translations of the archival photographs. The 16mm film takes as its source the photographic documents from the Yvonne Rainer Papers at the Getty. Bornstein enlisted dancers to animate poses taken directly from the Papers. The execution of the film explores her interest in the use of the body and nudity as a political gesture in art-related movements of the 20th-century, and photography in documenting performance. Jennifer Bornstein lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Europe and the United States, including MAK Centre for Art and Architecture, West Hollywood, California (2010); Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham (2010); Fargfabriken Center forContemporary Art, Stockholm (2009); and MOCA, Los Angeles, California (2005). greengrassi 1a Kempsford Road (off Wincott Street) London SE11 4NU t: +44 (0) 20 7840 9101 f: +44 (0) 20 7840 9102 Tube: Kennington, Lambeth North Buses: 3,159,59,155,133,333 All images Courtesy of greengrassi London Photos: Marcus Leith |
