Vincent Fecteau opens 6.30 to 8.30pm Thursday the 11th of March 2010 until 17/4/10 11am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday Vincent Fecteaus third solo show at greengrassi comprises his first series of wall-based sculptures. The sculptures deal with fundamental aspects of form: shape, volume, scale, material and colour. Fecteaus previous work often contained elements of collage but in the last few years he has worked exclusively with acrylic paint over papier-mch. This allows him to produce increasingly intricate forms and the new works shown at greengrassi are amongst his largest and most spatially complex. The sculptures are worked on in the round and are fully conceived from all angles. Once placed on the wall they develop two sides, one of which necessarily obscures the other. The works could be based on either side: the side that is hidden in the exhibition is as developed as the side that is on show. Their spatial complexity is thus heightened through their positioning on the wall, which emphasises their three-dimensionality whilst denying the viewer the possibility of a total view. Vincent Fecteau lives and works in San Francisco. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Europe and the United States. Recent solo exhibitions include Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, 2009; Focus: Vincent Fecteau, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, 2008; Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne, 2008; greengrassi, London, 2006. greengrassi 1a Kempsford Road (off Wincott Street) London SE11 4NU t: +44 (0) 20 7840 9101 f: +44 (0) 20 7840 9102 |
