Markus Oehlen Exhibition period: November 3–December 15, 2012 Gerhardsen Gerner Oslo has the great pleasure of announcing its first solo exhibition with new large format paintings by the German painter Markus Oehlen (*1956 in Krefeld, Germany). The painter, musician and sculptor Markus Oehlen, studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 1976 and 1982, during which time he was also a percussionist in the band Charley’s Girls and its successor Fehlfarben and Mittagspause. He was co-founder of the legendary “Ratinger Hof” in Düsseldorf, the city in which he worked during the wild 1980s as one of the leading representatives of the so-called “Neue Wilde”, alongside artists like Albert Oehlen (brother of Markus Oehlen), Martin Kippenberger, Werner Büttner and Walter Dahn. The art, fashion, music, literature, film and theatre of this generation became linked in a comprehensive crossover—the artists adapted to one another’s respective domains, motifs, methods, and codes and thus created new hybrid forms, the polar patterns of thought acting as foils to one another. In his newest works, as shown in the cycle of 8 large format canvases, Markus Oehlen presents his pictures as if they ought to be viewed with 3D-glasses. In his art Op, Pop and elements of Surrealism are combined and overlaid to form a compositional network. Stabilising linear grids and the free use of colours and 3D-effects, especially in the area of figuration, communicate sound, depth and rhythm. Markus Oehlen is depicting persons and heads, and objects like houses and vehicles. The colours are radiant and generate power, and their free interplay produces new connections. The lines meander to form shapes which recall fingerprints and other genetic codes. In this development the frame of reference in Oehlen’s pictures proves to be a musical one. The compositional approach and the technique of over-painting correspond to sampling and arranging in music. It is the spacing in the depth of a picture by which, without actually creating a sense of three-dimensionality, Oehlen suggests a printing process – often produced with entirely conventional techniques, such as silkscreen, photocopying, or linoleum printing – what results is always a kind of non-figurativeness, not in the reductive sense, but in the form of additive layering that ultimately makes it impossible to grasp a figurative content. Since 2002, Oehlen has been a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Gießen and the group exhibition “Die Bilder tun was mit mir…” at the Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden (both in 2010); at the Centro Cultural Andratx (2008-2009); at ZKM in Karlsruhe (2008); at the Ursula Blickle Foundation and at the Kunstverein Frankfurt (both in 2007); at the Haus der Kunst in Munich (2005); and at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2003).
