OLAFUR ELIASSON

Opening reception: September 1, 2012, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition duration: September 1 – October 27, 2012

Gerhardsen Gerner Oslo is delighted to announce its first exhibition of new works by the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (*1967).
For the exhibition at Gerhardsen Gerner Olafur Eliasson will be presenting a variety of new works on paper, c-print, glass, mirror and light.

Olafur Eliasson is among the most influential and widely acclaimed artists of his generation.
His immersive environments, sculptures, and photographs elegantly recreate the extremes of landscape and atmosphere in his native Scandinavia, while foregrounding the sensory experience of each work itself. Eliasson’s constructions, at once eccentric and highly geometric, use multicolored washes, focused projections of light, mirrors, and elements such as water, stone, and moss to shift the viewer's perception of place and self. By transforming the gallery into a hybrid space of nature and culture, Eliasson prompts an intensive engagement with the world and offers a fresh consideration of everyday life.

Throughout his career, Eliasson has challenged the notion of the artwork as a static object, instead suggesting that the meaning and generative potential of each work lies in the exchange between the piece and the viewer. It is the viewer's experience, subjective perception and mediation of the work that activates it; in turn Eliasson's installations, public projects, photographs and paintings prompt a new awareness in the viewer's own methods of interpreting the world.

Important early exhibitions include Manifesta 1, Rotterdam (1996); Truce: SITE Santa Fe (1997); Johannesburg Biennial (1998); Sao Paolo Biennial (1998); The Carnegie International 99/00; four Venice Biennales (represented Denmark in their national pavilion in 2003) among numerous others. Eliasson has had solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago (1999); the ICA Boston (2001); Turbine Hall, Tate Modern (2003); Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2003); Kunsthalle Zug (2004); the Aspen Art Museum (2004); Malmö Konsthall (2005) and many more.
Eliasson has had a first major survey exhibition in 2007 that opened at San Francisco, MoMA and traveled to New York, MoMA and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York among others. Most recent solo exhibition were at Arken Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (2010) and Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo as well as PinchukArtCentre, Kiev (2011).
