In their celebrated text "Dialektik der Aufkl�rung / Dialectic of Enlightenment� (1944), Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer write that �the fully enlightened Earth radiates disaster triumphant�. While this insight is now more than half a century old, it still rings true. We live in an age of disappearance: in a world with no blank spots left on the map, we are more likely to see something for the last time than for the first. At the same time, humankind can now reproduce nature by scientific means. This gives us unprecedented and near-sovereign power, but it also places nature perhaps forever out of our reach, rendering it a mere function of ourselves. In such a situation, �nature� is an ambiguous sign. On the one hand, it will never cease to promise us authenticity or escape and, on the other, it is a melancholy relic of our own domination over it. In this way, nature becomes a mirror for the human subject. However, this reflective quality works differently than it has historically, when artists looked to nature for answers on human origin, or depicted it as chaotic and fear-provoking in order to subdue the hubris of our culture. The artists in this exhibition work in a wide range of media, from photography and painting to sound and installation. They reflect on and deconstruct conventional formats for the representation of nature, including landscape painting, depictions of paradise and of the human nude. In this way nature � as an artistic and scientific sign, as well as a fact that can be romantic in varying degrees � becomes a foil to exceed culture, to make images of other images, and to turn our gaze either away from or towards ourselves. November, 19�21 Uhr Ausstellungsdauer: 12. November 2010 � 14. Januar 2011 In dieser Gruppenausstellung bei Gerhardsen Gerner erkunden zw�lf zeitgen�ssische K�nstler ihre Haltung zu Natur. In ihren ber�hmeten Text �Dialektik der Aufkl�rung� (1944) schreiben Theodor Adorno und Max Horkheimer, da� �die vollends aufgekl�rte Erde im Zeichen triumphalen Unheils [strahlt]�. Auch wenn diese Erkenntnis nun mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert alt ist, birgt sie Wahrheit. Wir leben in einem Zeitalter des Verschwinders: In einer Welt, die keinerlei wei�e Flecken mehr auf der Landkarte aufweist, sehen wir aller Wahrscheinlichkeit Dinge eher zum letzten als zum ersten Mal. Zugleich kann die Menschheit Natur nun mit Hilfe der Wissenschaft reproduzieren, was uns eine noch nie dagewesene und fast souver�ne Macht verleiht. Doch vielleicht r�ckt uns dies die Natur auch f�r immer au�er Reichweite, da sie so zu einer blo�en Funktion unserer selbst wird. In einer solchen Situation wird Natur zu einem vieldeutigen Indiz. Sie wird uns einerseits immer Urspr�nglichkeit und Rettung versprechen, andererseits wird Natur zu einem melancholischen �berrest unserer eigenen Dominanz �ber sie. Demzufolge erscheint Natur als ein Spiegel des menschliches Subjekts � allerdings nicht im historischen Sinn, als K�nstler menschlichen Ursprung suchten oder sie als chaotisch und angsteinfl��end darstellten, um die Hybris unserer Kultur aufzuzeigen. Die K�nstler der Gruppenausstellung arbeiten in unterschiedlichen Medien von Fotografie und Malerei zu Klangkunst und Installationen. Sie reflektieren und dekonstruieren konventionelle Formate der Naturdarstellung, so beispielsweise Landschaftsmalerei, Paradiesphantasien und den menschlichen K�rper. Auf diese Weise wird Natur � als k�nstlerisches und wissenschaftliches Kriterium sowie als Umstand, der so romantisch sein kann wie wir es nur w�nschen � zum Vorwand, die Kultur zu �bertreffen, um Abbildungen von Abbildungen herzustellen und schlie�lich um unseren Blick von uns selbst abzuwenden bzw. ihn uns selbst zuzuwenden.
