THE UNUTTERABLE

Aschenbach & Hofland Galleries is proud to present The Unutterable. A Group exhibition composed by Michael Kirkham with new works by Michael Kirkham, Wouter van Riessen and Jukka Korkeila.

The work by Michael Kirkham (1971 Blackpool) often features characters engaged in explicit sexual acts or rather apathetic figures striking provocative poses. The subject matter is displayed in all its rawness, with neither mercy nor compromise. In the work of Michael Kirkham, sexual desire and surrendering to the appetites of the flesh is a mechanism that makes viewers feel uncomfortable. Nonetheless, Kirkhams consistent and loving execution, his sincerity and all but cynical attitude forces viewers to look at his uncompromising scenes.
Michael Kirkham completed his formal training at the Glasgow School of Art and Ateliers in Amsterdam. His work is represented in the collections of Gemeentemuseum The Hague, the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem and the Centraal Museum Utrecht. In 2009 Kirkham took part in the exhibition Diana + Actaeon, Der Verbotene Blick auf die Nacktheit in Museum Kunst Palast, Dsseldorf and recently in Lebenslust und Totentanz in Kunsthalle Krems, in Austria.

Wouter van Riessen (1967) is known for his stylistic self-portraits and doll-paintings: Every person is tempted by his animistic view to recognize a face in three points that looks back at him. This mechanism fascinates me.
His latest work, though, goes a step further. At present, the viewer gets the feeling to be sucked into the psyche of the depicted figures. For instance, the magic literally runs through the body of the 'Magician' and we feel melancholic looking at the painting 'Garment'. Refers this garment to a desire or is it a reference for a more religious theme? Behind these images of Van Riessen lies an inviolable mystery that the viewer tries to unravel.
After completing his education at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, Van Riessen exhibited in numerous museums including Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem (2009), Museum het Domein in Sittard (2007) and the Vishal in Haarlem (2004). Van Riessen gained also several prestigious awards such as the Charlotte Khler Prize (1999) and Koninklijke Prijs voor de Schilderkunst (1993). By the end of May his work can also be seen at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

Painter Jukka Korkeila (b.1968 Helsinki) breaks boundaries both in the content of his images and in the tradition of painting which he brings into a contemporary visual aesthetic. Korkeilas works demonstrate the artists ability to depict todays oddities and private fantasy worlds. He is interested in the issues of his surroundings; phenomena and details which he assimilates into his works. The super-baroque layering of visual material has already become a characteristic trademark of Korkeilas art.
Jukka Korkeila lives and works in Helsinki and Berlin He studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Techonology (1988-1990) and interior- and furniture design at the University of Art and Design (1990-1992). He moved to the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts (1992-1997) and continued his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts (1997-1998). Year 1999 Korkeila was appointed by the Young Artist Award in Finland and in 2004 he participated in the So Paulo Biennale.
