Jan van der Ploeg
MWMW

Gerhard Hofland is delighted to announce the latest solo exhibition, MWMW, of Jan van der Ploeg (1959, Amsterdam). MWMW consists of 10 new paintings and an edition produced especially for the occasion.

MWMW opens in parallel with the exhibition Pink Moon - Organising Principles in art space NASA. For the exhibition in NASA, Van der Ploeg designed and produced several wall paintings and was commissioned to create a design for the stairwell and the restaurant.

Jan van der Ploeg is best known for his distinctive geometric motifs which are the starting point for his wall paintings. Van der Ploeg’s motifs combine functionality and simplicity with shapes and colours borrowed from popular culture. In both his paintings and his murals, Van der Ploeg employs a harmonious blend of strict, minimalist principles and playful pop influences. His wall paintings, editions and paintings speak of the pleasure Van der Ploeg takes in their creation.
His paintings consist of apparently simple compositions executed in two or three colours. Van der Ploeg’s colours are built up carefully out of multiple layers of different tints, giving each colour a particular weight and intention. The composition often also offers an optical visual effect.

With his wall paintings, which integrate the architectural space into the work, Van der Ploeg offers the viewer an almost physical experience. In the smaller, more intimate area of the painting, Van der Ploeg’s saturated palette and optically mesmerizing compositions invite the viewer to become immersed in a more concentrated experience of seeing.

Jan van der Ploeg (born 1959, Amsterdam) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam (1980-82) and Croydon College of Art in London (1982-83). In 1983-85 he was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Selected solo exhibitions include: HAMMER Museum, Los Angeles; MINUSSPACE, New York; The Suburban, Chicago; SNO, Sydney; Waikato Museum of Art and History, Hamilton, New Zealand; CCNOA, Brussels; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. He participated in many group exhibitions in the Netherlands and elsewhere. He is represented by VON BARTHA, Basel; Gerhard Hofland, Amsterdam; Hamisch McKay Gallery, Wellington, New Zealand; Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney & Ruth Leuchter, Dusseldorf. His commissioned works can be seen at the Rai Congress Centre in Amsterdam and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Finance in The Hague.
