Dimitar Genchev Nostalgia Dimitar Genchev (1985, Plovdiv, Bulgaria) is a painter and graduated in 2012 from Utrecht School of the Arts. He is currently in his final year as a resident artist at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Genchev’s paintings are loaded with images engraved in his memory, and the result of his close observation of everyday life in Bulgaria. Commonplace everyday things such as furnished interiors, a day at the beach, or tables strewn with the remnants of a meal are the subjects of his work. Genchev reveals to us the beauty of these apparently ordinary things. And yet, when least expected, he combines his subjects in such a way as to convolute reality and our perceptions of it. Genchev deploys a variety of techniques. Some paintings have been strenuously worked – so much so that the paint layers are seared or covered by thick layers of varnish to create a diffuse, transparent membrane. He combines this more materially-engaged approach with his realistic virtuoso painting technique. Genchev is fascinated by how photography takes the place of memory on social media like Facebook, and the way in which each individual stores images in their personal memory. - Dimitar Genchev (1985, Plovdiv, Bulgarije) is schilder en studeerde in 2012 af aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten te Utrecht en verblijft momenteel in het laatste jaar van zijn Rijksakademie - residency te Amsterdam. De schilderijen van Dimitar Genchev (1985, Plovdiv, Bulgarije) zijn beladen met beelden uit zijn geheugen en het resultaat van zijn nauwe observaties van het dagelijks leven in zijn geboorteland Bulgarije. Eenvoudige alledaagse dingen, zoals ingerichte kamers, een dag op het strand, of tafels met resten van een diner vormen de onderwerpen voor zijn werk. Genchev toont ons de schoonheid van deze ogenschijnlijke gewone zaken. Op onverwachte wijze combineert hij onderwerpen en herschikt hij de werkelijkheid en onze perceptie hiervan. Genchev gebruikt verschillende technieken door elkaar. Sommige werken hebben drastische bewerkingen ondergaan waarbij verflagen intensief worden geschuurd of bewerkt met dikke lagen lak waardoor diffuse, transparante schermen ontstaan. Deze meer materiële benadering combineert hij met zijn virtuoze realistische schilderstechniek. Genchev is gefascineerd hoe de fotografie het geheugen overneemt op sociale media zoals Facebook en op welke manier het eigen persoonlijke geheugen beelden opslaat. thursday - saturday 13:00 - 17:00 hours by appointment and every second Wednesday of the month from 18:00 - 21:00 hours |
