Whatever Lola Wants Fritz Bornstück Simon Hemmer Klaas Kloosterboer Jan Van der Ploeg February 18 – March 24 Opening: Saturday February 18 3 – 7 pm. Whatever Lola Wants is a group exhibition with new works by Fritz Bornstück, Klaas Kloosterboer, Simon Hemmer and Jan van der Ploeg. Jan van der Ploeg has designed a limited edition poster specifically for the occasion. This autonomous work incorporates a continuous motif that can also be used to cover an entire wall. Work on show by the other artists also includes specially selected pieces. Fritz Bornstück (Weilburg Germany 1982) studied at the art school in Berlin with Professor Thomas Zipp and continued his training at De Ateliers in Amsterdam where he will hold his final presentation this summer. We are extremely proud to include the work of this young artist in the group exhibition Whatever Lola Wants. Bornstück is represented by Galerie Mikael Andersen (with galleries in Berlin and Copenhagen). Bornstück’s work consists of paintings, works on paper and sculptures. His work is playful and challenges all the ideals of beauty. The work of Klaas Kloosterboer is by nature direct. The decisions involved in the creative process are always easy to detect in his canvasses. His interventions may appear to be rapid, but limit themselves to two – or at the most three- actions, resulting in remarkably transparent pictures with no more than a foreground and a background. This, in combination with the physical expressive force that the work possesses, brings about an impression of high speed. Klaas Kloosterboer is represented by Galerie Van Gelder and Ellen de Bruijne Projects, both in Amsterdam. Kloosterboer had solo exhibitions in Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe in 2003 and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 2009. He took part in the Reykjavik Arts Festival 2009, in Dumb painting in Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle in Belgium and Kunsthalle, Budapest in Hungary. A solo exhibition of his work opened in Villa Roma in Florence, Italy, in March 2010. Simon Hemmer (1978 Cologne) pursued his studies at the Kunstacademie in Dusseldorf in the class of Albert Oehlen (2002) and continued with a residency at De Ateliers, Amsterdam (2007). Hemmer has regularly exhibited sculpture and predominantly painting, since 2002. Hofland Galerie has represented Hemmer for several years. Hemmer’s work focuses on the process of painting itself. Rather than offer us autobiographic tid-bits, Hemmer engages in a play with shapes and styles to display and celebrate the potentialities and creative function of painting. With incredible talent and at a dazzling pace, Hemmer paints rooms, objects, grids and shapes that are not what they would have us believe. Hemmer exposes the process of imagination and creation by playing with the traditional principles of painting, turning them inside out and upside down. Simon Hemmer recently joined Galerie Luis Campana in Berlin and had his first solo show there last summer. Jan van der Ploeg (1959 Amsterdam) began painting murals in his signature geometric designs in his hometown of Amsterdam. Since then, he has painted his designs on the walls of galleries, museums, artist-led spaces, corporate environments and the homes of private collectors throughout the world. His visual language incorporates combinations of simple shapes and bright colours in varying dimensions. Van der Ploeg strives for functionality and simplicity blended with shapes and hues drawn from popular culture. Jan van der Ploeg followed his art training at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and at Croydon College of Art in London. Recent solo exhibitions include shows at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the House of Art in Budweis in Czech, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. In 2010 Van der Ploeg had a two-person show with Thom Puckey at Centro del l'Arte Contemporanea, Prato, Italy and his work was featured in Riposte, an exhibition held last year at Stedelijk Museum Den Bosch. |
