Sven-Ole Frahm Hangover Aschenbach & Hofland Galleries is proud to present new work by Sven-Ole Frahm (Bonn, 1972) in the exhibition �Hangover�. The work of the Berlin-based artist draws on a variety of materials and formal painterly references. What sets Frahm�s work apart is the collage technique he uses. With the aid of a sewing machine, he re-configures different sections of linen and calico; stitching and restructuring the canvas are fundamental elements in his work. We see threads dangling to the floor while stitches are shown the back, juxtaposed with sections of textile that extend outwards from the canvas and are suspended from the work. Frahm works within the idiom of abstract painting, deploying a working method closely akin to a sculptural process. In several canvases, Frahm painted areas of linen and cotton, before cutting into them and reforming them into new images. Within this process, the chronology of image and carrier vanishes. In other pieces, we see this process in reverse. By cutting and stitching, the artist creates structures that he goes on to work at armed with a paintbrush, palette knife and spray paint. In both cases Frahm establishes new relationships between the conventional image and space. His use of an array of fabrics each with its own features and colour, in conjunction with his utilisation of fragments of already painted canvas, infuses the composition with vitality. Frahm�s technique of combining fabric and cut-and-paste with a painterly intervention unites both the two-dimensional principles of the painter and the three-dimensional fundaments of the sculptor. By giving equal weight to contrasting or inter-connected painterly and constructional elements, Frahm gives his work an openness and layerdness that draws in the viewer, encouraging them to become lost in contemplation of the composition. Outside of the Netherlands, Frahm is represented by Galerie Thomas Flohr in Dusseldorf and Aanant & Zoo in Berlin. For his remarkable technique Sven-Ole Frahm won the prestigious German prize for painting, the �Bergischer Kunstpreis�, in 2006. Frahm graduated from the Art Academy in Dusseldorf in 2001. Julia M�nstermann aerials In de stad bij nacht wordt het verschil tussen exterieur en interieur, opgeheven. De schilderijen van Julia M�nstermann zijn intu�tieve verkenningen van de grootstad als reusachtig, wezenloos decor, badend in een onnatuurlijk licht. Hoe herkenbaar ook, het stadsbeeld dat hier voor ogen wordt gevoerd is vreemd en onecht, alsof het een simulatie betreft, een nagebootste werkelijkheid die opgevoerd lijkt te worden om tegemoet te komen aan onze dromen en wensen. De stad, verkleurd door neonlicht en deels in duisternis gehuld, verschijnt hier als in een film, glamoureus en misleidend. M�nstermann deelt met de kijker haar desori�ntatie in deze ruimte die spannend, opwindend en nog ongedefinieerd is omdat hij nog niet vanzelfsprekend is in ons kijken. |
