English below Elina Brotherus "Artists at Work" 20 f�vrier - 20 mars 2010 Second volet de deux expositions personnelles cons�cutives d�di�es au travail de l�artiste finlandaise Elina Brotherus � gb agency, cette exposition pr�sente sa derni�re s�rie d�oeuvres intitul�e Artists at Work. Cette nouvelle s�rie r�unit un ensemble de neuf photographies ainsi qu�une vid�o autour du th�me du travail artistique et de sa repr�sentation. Dans la lign�e de ses questionnements sur les rapports entre peinture et photographie mais �galement sur la repr�sentation de l�artiste et de sa relation au mod�le, cette s�rie montre l�artiste posant nue dans un atelier vide devant deux peintres form�s � la tradition classique du portrait � l�acad�mie russe de Saint-Petersbourg. Laissant le dispositif photographique visible � l�image, l�artiste devient ainsi � la fois un mod�le pour les deux peintres mais aussi le mod�le de sa propre photographie. Ce qu�elle per�oit est ainsi mis en ab�me avec la fa�on dont elle est per�ue � travers un chass�-crois� de regards. Les diff�rentes photographies ainsi que la vid�o d�voilent l��volution de la s�ance de pose � travers l�avancement du portrait sur les toiles et les relations de travail des artistes entre eux. Du portrait de l�artiste sur les toiles au portrait photographique des artistes au travail, cette nouvelle s�rie d�Elina Brotherus d�peint un moment de partage et de cr�ation artistique oscillant entre mise en sc�ne et authenticit�. Elina Brotherus (1972) pratique la photographie et la vid�o. Dipl�m�e de l'Universit� d'Art et de Design d'Helsinki, elle vit en Finlande et en France. Elle a re�u le Prix Ni�pce de la Photographie de Gens d�image en 2005 et le Prix Mosa�que du Centre National de l'Audiovisuel du Luxembourg en 2001 et publi� trois monographies: �Decisive days, photographies 1997-2001� (Kustannus Pohjoinen, Finlande, 2002), �The New Painting� (Next Level, U.K., 2005) et �Etudes d�apr�s mod�le, danseurs� (Editions Textuel, avec l�aide de l�Op�ra de Paris, France, 2007). Son nouveau livre autour de la s�rie �Artist and her Model� est en cours d��laboration. Elina Brotherus "Artists at Work" February 20 - March 20, 2010 This second part of two consecutive solo exhibitions dedicated to the work of the Finnish artist Elina Brotherus at gb agency presents the latest series of work by the artist entitled �Artists at Work�. It gathers together a series of nine photographs as well as a video around the theme of the artistic work and its representation. Following a long-time interest in the representation of the artist and her/his relationships to a model, this new series depicts the artist herself being a model of two painters who eventually become models as well. � Who is watching whom? Who is the artist, who is the model? Who gets the �last gaze�? Having used myself as a model since a long time, I wanted to develop further the notions of the artist�s gaze, the model and the self-portrait of an artist. Last summer I met two young painters, Jan Neva and Teemu Korpela. They have studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg, where the academic tradition of painting the nude still prevails. In art history one can find a type of image where the painter presents himself with the model in the studio (and often looks over his shoulder towards the spectator). I wanted a situation where it is the model who presents herself posing as a model. Traditionally the painter watches the model and the model watches nobody. In our �unholy model session� the roles get mixed: the model becomes an image-maker and the painters become models. In principle the situation is similar to that where I�m making a solitary self-portrait, facing the camera on a tripod, and showing with the cable release that I�m at the same time author and subject, artist and model. However, the painters at work concretisize the posing as even more real. Furthermore, I was curious to hear how it would affect the painters� work when the model looks back at them, observs the observers, makes in turn their portrait with her own medium.� Elina Brotherus, December 28, 2009 Elina Brotherus (1972) works with photography and video. She lives in Finland and France. She was a recipient of the Prix Ni�pce de la Photographie des Gens d�image in 2005 and of the Prix Mosa�que du Centre National de l'Audiovisuel du Luxembourg in 2001.
