HASAN and HUSAIN ESSOP Indelible Marks 19 September - 20 October 2011 South African artists and twin brothers Hasan and Husain Essop photographic oeuvre varies between concerns of memory, identity and lived experience in their native South Africa. The photographs are highly dramatised scenes. Some depict preconceived notions of conflict, while others capture more ritualistic moments. Suddenly humble scenes become hostile and allude to rebellion, as demonstrated in this body of work. Location in the photographs is key, as they are scenes staged in the dusty old part of Cape Town, Rylands Estate; a place symbolic of apartheid clashes. The Essop brothers employ a distinct process to making photographs, creating a montage of imagery by respectively placing themselves in digitally enhanced mise en scenes. Printed on cotton rag, this choice of material gives a warm organic and velvety matt effect. Finally, they use pigment-based colours which seem to soften the subjects, making them quite picturesque. Humour, wit, chaos, rebellion become poignant in a practise that is highly politicised due to the history of South Africa, and the identity of the Essop’s as young Muslims living there. Born in 1985 in Cape Town, South Africa, Hasan and Husain Essop attended the prestigious Michaelis School of Fine Art at University of Cape Town where they graduated in Fine Art, majoring in Printmaking and Photography respectively. They both completed their Postgraduate Diploma in Art at Michaelis School as well. The Essop brothers have exhibited internationally at the Victoria and Albert Museum, England, The Helsinki Art Museum, Finland as well as the Dakar and Havana Biennales. They regularly exhibit in their native country with Goodman Gallery and this will be their inaugural exhibition in Dubai. GALLERY ISABELLE VAN DEN EYNDE Al Quoz 1, street 8, Al Serkal Av. # 17, Po.
