BRAIN IN A VAT Galleri Tom Christoffersen presents Henrik Menns solo exhibition BRAIN IN A VAT - contemporary sculpture concentrating on process, machine and on the act of making sculpture in an expanded field. Fascinating, insisting and irritating are appropriate terms when talking about the three new machines by Henrik Menn. Continuously, they produce drawings, tin objects or elaborate stone. The machine produced objects function as works in themselves but all though they are exhibited as such they are difficult to part from the actual fabrication as long as the works Drawing Machine, Stone and Stone and 5T turns the gallery space into an artists workshop. Being in the situation while the works are in the making characterizes the ephemeral relation between work and viewer, which earlier sculptures by Henrik Menn also insist on. The fact that the artist - by inserting the machine - is distanced at least one step from the realisation of the work is also typical of Menns production. A last important issue is the fine balance between the controllable and chance, between the mechanical repetition and the unpredictable marginal variation, which theoretically makes the process infinite and prevents the objects from becoming identical. The exhibition catalogue contains texts by Robin Clark and Magnus Thor Clausen. The catalogue is about the three new machines by Henrik Menn and presents selected works from 2000-2007. By the invitation of Aura Kunstfrening (The Art Association Aura) BRAIN IN A VAT will be shown at Krognoshuset (Lund/Sweden) in 2008 The exhibition and catalogue are supported by the Danish Arts Council. Henrik Menn (1973) graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Cph.) in 2002.
