Susumu Shingu Beyond Time Opening on Saturday September 15th from 4 to 7pm Exhibition from September 15th to December 1st 2012 “During my 40 years of work, I have always expressed through my sculptures, my exhibitions, my illustrated books and my theatre plays how much Earth is a wonderful and precious planet. Since man made disasters caused on our planet are reaching a critical level, I feel there is even more emergency to send my simple message to all the inhabitants of this planet, which is, what wonderful Nature we have on our planet (…). I believe men are benevolent. And I also believe in Art. Since the visible future is one for our children, I would like to address them this message.” Susumu Shingu Following the success of his two previous exhibitions at the gallery entitled Sculptures du respir in 2006 and Planet of Wind and Water in 2009, the gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition by the Japanese artist Susumu Shingu entitled Beyond Time. A dozen of his new mobile indoor sculptures as well as two sculptures for outdoor; the last coloured collages of the artist as well as his wonderful sculpture study drawings will also be shown on the occasion of this exhibition. Born in 1937 in Osaka, Susumu Shingu conceives sculptures with movements generated by the forces and flows of nature – wind, water, sunlight and gravity. True poet of Nature, his mobile sculptures are full of lightness, playful and full of musicality, as an echo to the infinite beauty of our planet. The observation of the movements of natural elements leads him to an extreme refinement in choice of medium, his sculptures make a skilful and scientific use of the most up to date materials. Each of his works brings a breath of hope and life for the planet: thus the Wind Caravan, an exceptional project consisting of 21 sculptures which the artist installed between 2000 and 2001 in six remote places across the planet, in a variety of windy climates with no electricity, or thus his latest project, entitled Genki Caravan Yuriage, which consisted in the installation of these 21 same sculptures, this time covered with multicoloured wings, in a fisherman’s village named Yuriage in the North of Japan, which was entirely decimated by the recent tsunami. A 10mns video of the Genki Caravan Yuriage,realised by the wife of the artist on the Yuriage site will be projected at the gallery during the exhibition. After the initial presentation of the Breathing Earth diorama – an autonomous village entirely regulated by natural energies – in the 2009 exhibition at the gallery, the artist has tested his 8m20 windmill prototype on a site near Kobé in Japan.This exhibition will also be the occasion to introduce the new Breathing Earth portfolio which includes 5 prints realized in photoetching, numbered at 50 and signed by the artist; this portfolio has been printed in Japan by Ritsuwo Kanno and co-published by the gallery and the artist studio. A trilingual (French, English and Japanese) catalogue of 108 pages including full colour reproductions of the sculptures and works on paper, with texts from Takeshi Umehara, philosopher and researcher of Japanese culture and of Véronique Jaeger will be available for sale at the gallery. Also : - Presentation of the new illustrated book by Susumu Shingu entitled Traveling Butterfly, published in 2012 by Gallimard.Available for sale at the gallery and at the bookstore La Hune. - The galerie will participate at FIAC (Grand Palais) from October 18 to 21st - Booth O.D24 - From October 10 to 30th, an installation by Susumu Shingu will be presented in the large octogonal basin of the Tuileries, on the occasion of FIAC. - Exclusive Presentation of the film Breathing Earth: Susumu Shingu’s Dream by the filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer.This film will be exceptionally presented on the occasion of FIAC, in the auditorium of the Grand Palais on Sunday October 21st at 3pm (lenght 1h30mn) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Susumu Shingu Au-delà du temps Vernissage le samedi 15 septembre 2012 « J’ai toujours exprimé durant mes 40 années de travail, à travers mes sculptures, mes expositions, mes livres illustrés et mes pièces de théâtre, combien la Terre est une planète magnifique et précieuse. Alors que les dégâts causés sur notre terre sont à présent si critiques, je sens qu’il est encore plus nécessaire d’adresser mon message simple à tous les habitants de cette planète, c’est à dire, quelle merveilleuse nature nous avons sur notre planète.(…) Je crois en la bienveillance des êtres humains. Et je crois également à la portée de l’art. Puisque le futur qui nous est visible est celui de nos enfants. J’aimerais leur adresser mon message ». Susumu Shingu Faisant suite au succès de ses deux précédentes expositions à la galerie Sculptures du respir en 2006 et Planet of Wind and Water en 2009, la galerie présente la nouvelle exposition personnelle de l’artiste japonais Susumu Shingu intitulée Au delà du temps. Une dizaine des nouvelles sculptures mobiles de l’artiste conçues pour l’intérieur ainsi que deux sculptures pour l’extérieur sont exposées ainsi que les derniers collages colorés de l’artiste et ses merveilleuses études. Né en 1937 à Osaka, Susumu Shingu conçoit des sculptures animées - en métal léger ou en tissu - dont les mouvements sont générés par les forces et les flux constitutifs de la nature comme le vent, l’eau, le soleil et la gravité. Véritable poète de la Nature, ses sculptures mobiles, dansantes, polyphoniques et ludiques font écho à l’infinie beauté des formes naturelles de notre planète. Le mouvement de ces sculptures dans l’espace s’accompagne quasi systématiquement d’une prise de conscience de l’observateur qui se sent intrinsèquement lié aux mêmes énergies que celles de la sculpture, le reconnectant ainsi au principe vital fondamental, celui de l’inspir et de l’expir, celui du Souffle. Cette coopération avec les éléments naturels le mène au gré du temps au raffinement extrême de son medium avec un usage scientifique des matériaux les plus actuels. Chacune de ses oeuvres consiste à apporter une respiration, un souffle d’espoir et de vie pour la planète, que ce soit à travers;la Caravane du vent, projet exceptionnel où l’artiste a fait voyager 21 sculptures entre 2000 et 2001, dans six endroits isolés et caractéristiques de leur état pur, pourvus d’une variété de climats à grand vent et sans électricité, ou que ce soit à travers son dernier projet intitulé Genki Caravan Yuriage qui a consisté à installer ces mêmes 21 sculptures, munies cette fois de voiles multicolores, dans un village de pêcheurs nommé Yuriage, au Nord du Japon, entièrement décimé par le récent tsunami. Une vidéo de 10 minutes du Genki Caravan Yuriage réalisée par l’épouse de l’artiste est projetée à la galerie durant l’exposition. Après la présentation initiale du diorama de Breathing Earth – village autonome intégralement régulé par les énergies naturelles - lors de l’exposition de 2009 à la galerie, l’exposition actuelle est l’occasion de suivre le développement du projet et des récents tests réalisés avec le prototype d’ailes éoliennes. Un nouveau Portfolio de Breathing Earth comprenant des informations sur Breathing Earth et des planches numérotées et signées par l’artiste est en vente à la galerie durant l’exposition. UN CATALOGUE TRILINGUE (français, anglais et japonais) de 108 pages comportant de nombreuses reproductions en couleurs des sculptures et oeuvres sur papier figurant dans l’exposition, est publié. Il comprend des textes de Takeshi Umehara, philosophe et chercheur en culture japonaise, de Susumu Shingu sur Breathing Earth et de Véronique Jaeger sur l’oeuvre de Shingu. En vente à la galerie durant l’exposition.
