BJRN MELHUS : THE CASTLE - THE MEADOW - THE CITY Oponing hours during the start of the season: Friday, August 31, 6-10 p.m. Saturday, September 1, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday, September 2, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Exhibition : August 30 - November 10, 2007 In his works the artist Bjrn Melhus subjects well-known, foremost American, media formats and their reception by a more an more commercialised society to a process of reflection, de-construction and re-conceptualisation. Melhus borrows the characters of his works from the pop culture constituted in film and television and with their help questions the myths of our consciousness of media. In the exhibition Bjrn Melhus shows the first episode of his actual video trilogy THE CASTLE - THE MEADOW - THE CITY. While in the ground floor an installation with parts of the still to be finished works THE CASTLE and THE CITY will be presented, in the basement will be projected for the first time the central work of the trilogy, the 28 minutes video loop THE MEADOW. In THE MEADOW Melhus ties up to the final sequence of his film AUTO CENTER DRIVE (2003) in which the main character Jimmy drives in a driverless car towards the horizon and therewith towards an unknown future. THE MEADOW is a moved personality profile of stagnancy in the form of an endless right through the night. In the course of this journey the protagonist again and again leaves for excursions into the woods to, after diverse confrontations, return fast into the questionable shelter of the car. While the character Jimmy, now seven years older, still cites sentences of the films Rebel without a Cause (USA 1955) und East of Eden (USA 1955), almost all the language fragments used by the protagonists appearing in the woods are taken from the classic film Bambi (USA 1942). By de-constructing and re-contextualising Amercian film myths THE MEADOW draws an image of a nightmarish and hopeless situation of the fear of the unknown and therewith forms the departing point of the trilogy which illuminates different scenarios of fear and threat. Project space SATELLIT Arne Witt - SURVEY ----------- Videoprogram curated by Bjrn Melhus: Markus Bertuch Jan Bode Franziska Cordes Bugi Corovich Mascha Danzis Silvia Gtz Barbara Hirn Yuki Jungesblut Ke Liu Daniel Massow Jenny Michel Byoung Lae Park Ariane Pauls Flaut Michael Rauch Julia Richter Andrea Schll Maja Wirkus Arne Witt ----------- Opening hours during the start of the season: Friday, August 31, 6-10 p.m. Saturday, September 1, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday, September 2, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Opening hours of SATELLIT: Tuesday-Friday 2-7 p.m. Saturday 12-4 p.m. Duration of the exhibition : August 31 - October 6, 2007 With his site-specific work Survey the artist Arne Witt intervenes in the architecture of the project space SATELLIT. Survey alludes to the signification of the term in archaeology describing the search of an area for historical traces. With the help of a very reduced intervention in the project space a condition of buildup, stagnation and decay resp. change is traced. Raw roof battens are wedged like steles between floor and ceiling. They seem to protect the space marked by the traces of its past from collapsing. Their fragile way of construction which makes them incapable to really fulfil their supporting function thereby seems to underline the scruffy and temporally limited condition of the space. The question of time and fugaciousness queried by the installation Survey continues into the outer space. An archaeological excavation with leftovers of a roman architecture, postwar-fassades at the central place Rmer or the skyline of Frankfurts bank neighbourhood: The work oscillates between the artistic staging and the everydayness and corresponds with the sites surrounding it in the outer space. ------------------- In the frame of Arne Witts exhibition the video programs SURVEY 1-5, curated by Bjrn Melhus, will be shown during the whole exhibition period. In five programs video works by different artists will be presented dealing with the search for evidence in private, medial and social spheres. While in the first part the protagonists tell in very different ways about their experiences in life, SURVEY 2 deals with the export, the history and the presence of social utopias. The works in the third program look in a very poetical way into the subject of the search of identity and the existence of mankind. In the fourth part images of the games of childhood and youth take center stage. The works of SURVEY 5 have in common the search for evidence and adoption of influences by the media. ________________________________________________________ Mir: a view from video art.
