Étant parti de la poésie au milieu des années 70, il est arrivé dans le domaine des arts visuels et s'est efforcé de "nettoyer" tout ce qui était superflu, de le soumettre à sa volonté créatrice. Un segment de son travail, que Martek appelle la "pré-poésie ", réduit ainsi la poésie à l'examen de la matérialité des éléments qui constituent le poème physiquement : les lettres, les formes poétiques (il s'agit très souvent de sonnets), les surfaces, les crayons, etc. De même, Martek rend sensible l'état mental précédant l'écriture de la poésie.""Tout acte de prise en main d'un crayon est un acte d'honnêteté", "Je ne suis pas un poète, car si je le voulais je pourrais l'être", ne sont que des exemples d'une série de slogans dont le thème est "la réévaluation de la poésie." Révolté contre la linéarité du texte, ses créations s'inscrivent dans le poétique à travers de nombreuses situations et actions réalisées dans les rues de différentes villes. En 1978, c'est à Zagreb qu'il a commencé ses agitations poétiques : "Lisez Maïakovski ", "Lisez Rimbaud" et bien d'autres, qu'il continue encore aujourd'hui. "Lisez Mallarmé", à Paris, est un hommage au poète qui a introduit dans son fameux "Un coup de dés" les innovations dans la visualité du poème. Martek a rejeté le poème pour faire place aux "processus élémentaires dans la poésie" - d'une part la synergie des éléments matériels concrets utilisés pour écrire la poésie et d'autre part l'idée de la tautologie, caractéristique de l'art conceptuel. Avec ces procédés il a opéré "la violence sur la poésie", mais en même temps il l'a mise en mouvement, il a rompu sa forme immanente statique et a ouvert de nouvelles possibilités. Martek est aussi un postmoderniste - dans ses oeuvres et ses actions il se réfère souvent à des oeuvres de différents domaines de la culture. Ses références vont dans toutes les directions, mais elles concernent majoritairement des idées d'écrivains et de poètes. Martek, qui passe sa vie professionnelle dans une bibliothèque, est un connaisseur et un chercheur en littérature, philosophie et l'art. C'est un lecteur obsessionnel et son art "provient" avant tout du monde de l'écrit, qui a toujours été un havre pour ce rebel romantique. Dans son travail il se référe à certaines idées du surréalisme, à une certaine conception du monde découlant de méthodes particulières comme une attitude intransigeante, la rébellion, le désir de construire un nouvel esprit et un monde différent. Il ne fait pas appel à la force des rêves, mais le hasard a une importance particulière. En réunissant ces divers éléments il a abouti à des combinaisons inhabituelles, en regardant ses poèmes-objets et des dessins, des livres et des actions ; le rationnel et l'irrationnel doivent être pris ici en considération ensemble. Son imagination est poétique, c'est pourquoi Martek est imprévisible dans les arts visuels. Images poétiques et métaphores sont en arrière-plan de ses oeuvres et ces allées et venues constantes entre le concret et le métaphorique rendent son travail intrigant. - Branka Stipancic --- Vlado Martek believes a contemporary artist must take a stand with respect to the resources at his disposal. Given that he arrived in the sphere of visual art from poetry, he invested efforts to purify poetry of everything that was superfluous, and subjected it to his creative will. For this reason Martek's "pre-poetry", as he terms one sphere of his work, is re-examination and "cleansing" of poetry to such an extent that he reduces it to examining the material quality of the elements he uses to achieve the physical feature of a poem: letters, poetic forms (often sonnets), surface, pencil, etc. Martek also raises the level of awareness of a state of mind preparing to write poetry: "Every act of picking up a pencil is an act of integrity" or "I am not a poet because if I want to I could be", are just two in a series of slogans entitled Pre-Valuation of Poetry. Rebelling against the linear in a text, he created poesy in situations and actions that he performed on the streets of various cities. Poetic agitations "read Mayakovsky's poems", "Read Rimbaud" and the others, started at 1978 in Zagreb he has been working until today. "Read Mallarmé" in Paris, is homage to the poet who in "Un coup de dés" introduced innovation into the visuality of poem. Martek dismissed the poem to give its place up to the "elementary processes in poetry" - the synergy of the concrete material elements used to write poetry and the idea of tautology at that time characteristic for Conceptual art. He used these processes to render "violence onto poetry", but also to put it into action, breaking up its immanent static form and opening up new possibilities. Martek is also a postmodernist - in his works and actions he often refers to works from various areas of culture. His references go in all directions, but mostly towards the ideas of writers and poets. Martek, who has spent his entire working age employed in a library, is a connoisseur and enjoyer of literature, philosophy and art. He is an obsessive reader and his art is largely "derived" from the world of the written word - which has always been a haven for this romantic rebel. His work alludes to specific ideas of Surrealism, a certain concept of the world from which special methods are derived, an irreconcilable attitude to life, rebellion, the striving for a new state of mind and different world. He does not call on the power of dreams, but chance carries special significance. His encounters with various elements result in unusual combinations, and when looking at his poem-objects and drawings, books and actions, the rational and irrational need to be mutually taken into consideration. As his imagination is poetic, Martek is unpredictable in the visual arts.
