The ESXLA Inaugural Exhibition CARMEN ARGOTE STEVE DeGROODT SEAN DUFFY ALICE LANG NICOLAU VERGUEIRO Sept 13 - Oct 4, 2014 Opening Reception: Saturday, Sept 13, 7-10 pm A sense of absence, origin, and conceptual potential set the stage for 'Ex nihilo', the inaugural exhibition at Eastside International (ESXLA). Overtures in the five artists’ work exemplify how these blanks and potentialities frame and contextualize larger concepts, new forms emerging via expanded definitions of process and approach. The seeming nothingness from which the exhibit springs is revealed to be the untapped material of the social and psychological world around us, from which all things arise. In the long philosophical, theological, and semantic history of creatio ex nihilo, it is stated that if nothing can be, then everything can be. 'Ex nihilo' was collaboratively curatored by Eastside International’s co-directors MIchelle Carla Handel, Jason Ramos, and Molly Jo Shea, and serves as an introduction to future lines of curatorial inquiry within the exhibiton program of ESXLA. |
