DRAWING IN RELATION 26. August - 16. October 2011 Preview: Thursday 25 August 7 - 9 pm Simon Faithfull (UK/DE), Donghwan Jo and Haejun Jo (KR), Kely (ES), Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (MX/ES), Marina Nuñez (ES), Anke Röhrscheid(DE), Michal Shamir (IL), Nedko Solakov (BG), Mariana Vassileva (BG/DE) Is drawing in and of itself still a contemporary medium? For decades, drawing celebrated its triumph as an independent art form and went on to establish its place in the art market. No longer limited to mere sketches, preliminary drafts, and studies, the medium evolved into a way to express what paintings, sculptures, and other forms could no longer clearly impart. The rise of new media, however, has led drawing to fade more and more into the background in recent years. Enter the current generation of young artists, who are expanding horizons by viewing drawing not only as a platform, but as an opportunity for expression and diversity, as well. Though there are myriad approaches to the medium, this exhibit intends mainly to explore how drawing relates to other forms, such as performance, photography, painting, video, and sculpture. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Simon Faithfull, for example, employ new techniques to create mechanical and digital drawings, while Anke Röhrscheid’s method blurs the line between drawing and painting. The 21st-century interplay of various media and the application of digital technology has created a whole new world of drawing – one that young artists are discovering for themselves. Selected by Fernando Galan, Seo-Young Kim und Johann Nowak |
