BARBADOS
(It's not where you're from, it's where you're at)

Sylvester Hegner, Thomas Hylander & Torben Ribe

March 7 – April 4, 2015

Sylvester Hegner (DK, 1985)
Hegner's paintings deal with their own physicality and painting's history. Taking generic motifs such as still life of wine glasses as a starting point, the paintings refer back into themselves with reference to their own stretcher bars and dimensions, elements of repetition and illusions of transparency.
Hegner completed his MFA at The Royal Danish Academy of fine Arts in 2014, following studies at Universität der Künste Berlin and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His paintings have been exhibited at Traneudstillingen, Gentofte, Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, BKS Garage, Copenhagen.

Thomas Hylander (DK, 1970)
Hylander’s paintings can be regarded as an archaeological excavation – in both the metaphorical digging into his memory and their physical appearance. The surfaces show the layers of time and a washing and rubbing back to reveal the genesis of the work.
Hylander lives and works in London after graduating with an MA in Fine Arts from the Royal College of Art in 2004. He has exhibited at Jerwood Contemporary Painters, London, Hauser and Wirth, Zurich, John Moores, Liverpool. He has paintings in several prominent collections including Samlung Essl, Austria, Zabludowicz collection, UBS, Zurich, Progressive art collection, USA and Tate Modern, UK.

Torben Ribe (DK, 1978).
Torben Ribe's paintings stretch the definition and question their position within the world. Ribe’s works cut and paste the literal into the language of abstraction. Ribe's paintings seem to define Mary Douglas' idea that dirt is matter out of place, his paintings are littered with unpaid bills, plastic display prawns, pizza slices and take out menus.
Ribe studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, His works have been shown at Galerie Hussenot, Paris, IMO, Copenhagen, BN 24, Hamburg, Kunstmuseet Køge Skitsesamling, Køge, Carnegie Art Award and Grand Century, NYC.
