Absence (Looking for Hammershøi)

David Risley Gallery is proud to present the group exhibition Absence (Looking for Hammershøi) with works by Frank Ammerlaan, Spencer Anthony, Anna Bjerger, Patrick Caulfield, Dexter Dalwood, Graham Dolphin, Wilhelm Freddie, David Hockney, Alex Katz, Alice Neel, Michael Simpson and Francesca Woodman.  

Absence is full of uninhabited rooms, empty chairs, abandoned mattresses, stopped clocks. Who is absent here? Francis Bacon, Rosa Luxemburg, Mark Rothko, Giordano Bruno, Whistler's Mother, Ryan Gander, Mary Aurory? They're all absent, sure, but mainly it's Vilhelm Hammershøi who isn't here. Hammershøi makes his presence felt in every shadow. He's standing just out of frame, ready to re-enter and take a final bow. Absence is a show without its protagonist and its works may all be read as portraits without their subjects present. They are haunted by the absent and Hammershøi's spirit floats through them all.  

Absence includes three previously unexhibited paintings by Patrick Caulfield along with a series of screenprints. A still life painting by Alice Neel from 1969. Dexter Dalwood has a painting from 1999 and a new work made for the show. A new work by Ryan Gander, as one of his aliases, Spencer Anthony. Two photographs by Francesca Woodman. An etching from 1968 by David Hockney. Graham Dolphin has made two new works for the show, Francis Bacon and Mark Rothko's chairs, made after fictional representations of their studios. A Wilhelm Freddie painting from 1932. Camp, a woodcut print from 1990 by Alex Katz. A Leper Squint painting by Michael Simpson. Two new paintings made for the show by Anna Bjerger.
