In the main gallery, Javier Pin's first solo show at the gallery The Flight of Icarus; in the David Castillo Annex, Paul Pretzer's Wild at Heart; and in the project room, LaToya Ruby Frazier's The Notion of Family. With his meticulously constructed collages and a new large-scale installation, Javier Pin retells the myth of Icarus as a sci-fi fantasy set in the American West. The American cowboy, the longtime protagonist in Pin's work, is here cast in the role of Icarus and aspires to escape the confines of his earthly limits. Whether leaping from rocky cliffs on fragile wings or shooting across time and space upon an archaic machine, his tragic fall serves as a fitting cautionary tale. Born in Miami and based in Brooklyn, Javier Pin has exhibited nationally and internationally after earning his MAT from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. His work has appeared in ArtReview, Art in America, the New York Times, and the New Yorker, among numerous other publications. David Castillo Annex is proud to present Paul Pretzer's first exhibition on the United States. The artist's small format oil paintings are dark humored glimpses into his creatures' predicaments. The classical composition and colors of the paintings draw the unsuspecting viewer into the fabel-like characters' fantastical dilemmas. His paintings create an unsettling easy balance between humor and tragic situations. By delivering these snippets of a story, Pretzer invites viewers to complete the narrative themselves. Paul Pretzer was born in Paide, Estonia in 1981 and now lives and works in Dresden, Germany. He has exhibited throughout Europe and is included in public and private collections around the world, including the Rubell Family Collection in Miami. In the project room, LaToya Ruby Frazier will be presenting The Notion of Family. In this ongoing collaborative body of work with her mother and grandmother, Frazier utilizes photography and video to produce work that intensely explores her family's psychological lineage through the 1930s, 1960s and 1980s. Her work is autobiographical and blurs the line between self-portraiture and social documentary. The family is seen from every angle when her mother functions as artist and photographer capturing Frazier as the subject. The Notion of Family defines the lines between private and public space, emotion, reality, memory, and human complexity. LaToya Ruby Frazier was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1982 and received her BFA in Photography and Graphic Design in 2004 at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She received her MFA in Art Photography from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University in 2007. Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including The New Museum, New York; the Brinx Museum; and National Academy Museum in New York City, among many others.
