David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Thinking of Things, a solo show by Frances Trombly. This is the artist's first solo exhibition with the gallery. Over the past year, the artist has been creating a new body of work for Thinking of Things, which indeed shows a profound pause for traditional sculpture practices and a new direction for often overlooked objects. One work which the artist made from the same materials a tarp is normally made of, takes us back through Modern Art History by referencing a tradition of sculpture. The exhibition creates a transition space, such as what a gallery would look like between shows. This notion of transition is also a reflection of the artist's new body of work. Building upon the false reality that her work is known for, she has made both objects that are not normally made from fiber and others that normally are, and has also incorporated elements which are routinely associated with the various objects (such as a mop handle or real tape on a box). As ever, her work explores an aesthetic reconsideration of objects we would rarely give any pause other than their immediate use and eventual discarding. Where things come from and where they end up and how they relate to us individually may seem like a lot to ask in a world overloaded with information, but that is exactly the intent of Thinking of Things. Naturally, in dealing with false realities, the artist's work continues to explore labor, perception, women's issues and history- as they relate to art and Art History as well, and of course, value. By exploring the masculine versus feminine dynamics, and industrial versus domestic, Trombly intentionally uses the traditionally feminine (knitting, sewing, crocheting, weaving, etc.) to explore those dynamics. In turning to various issues of reality, the artist has maintained her alignment to fiber as a primary medium since it is normally associated with craft. It is one way to push the medium out of its current stigma and into another realm for discussion. Like the show itself, Trombly's work is the story of transformation. Frances Trombly lives and works in Miami, has a BFA from the Maryland Institute's College of Art, and completed a residency in 2007 at the Vermont Studio Center. The artist is currently working on a project to be installed at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York this summer. She has shown previously in the group exhibition Real Time at the gallery. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US as well as venues abroad, and has been featured in various publications including Art & Auction, Art in America, The Miami Herald, and numerous other publications. She is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, Florida. The opening reception is generously sponsored by Coastal Wine & Sprits. |
