David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Aramis Gutierrez's first solo exhibition with the gallery Even Now In The Final Hour of My Life, I'm Falling In Love Again. The artist incorporates news or historic references in his work- sometimes in the subject matter, sometimes in the stylistic result, but whose narrative maintains a penchant for the personal. The sensibility toward certain styles or movements is never outweighed by his profound personal investment in the stories. With astute technical resolution, Gutierrez is easily able to address a golden age of classical painting while dealing with story lines of Evolutionary Psychology. That contradiction has a visually stimulating result. For example, as a literary reference the work After A Hundred Years of Solitude (from the book by Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez) is inspired by Titian's Gloria at the Prado Museum in Madrid. The story in the painting is the final scene from Marquez' novel when the last Buendia family member is reading about his death as it is taking place. The artist took images of New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina to depict the devastated town of Macondo in the novel. The last member of the Buendia family here is a self-portrait of the artist. Gutierrez's painted language contains an instinctive bow to history in contrast to darker narratives in sometimes idyllic settings. By extension, the works dialogue with Romanticism and contemporary notions of self-worth as derived from the media, such as films. Underpinning much of the work is the desire for meaningful destinies. In a most timely work, Caracas During Civil War, the artist hiked to the Avila in Caracas during a sunset to create sketches from that vantage point. The work depicts a threatening cloud mass, implying civil unrest in the smoke which rises up from the city. Aramis Gutierrez studied at Cooper Union where he received his degree in painting. The artist has shown in New York, Philadelphia, Palm Beach, Miami, Istanbul, Turkey, and other cities. He lives and works in Miami, and is currently part of the Studio Residency Program at the Deering Estate at Cutler. He has exhibited previously with the gallery in the gallery group show Real Time. His professional background began with the Yale University Art Gallery, and later museums and galleries in Miami & elsewhere. His studies and degrees are in History & Art History from Yale University & the Vatican. |
