ANETTA MONA CHISA & LUCIA TK�COV� Material Culture - curated by Dessislava Dimova in the context of curated by_vienna 2011 Opening: Thursday, May 12, 2011, 7 - 10 pm The artists are present. Duration of the exhibition: May 13 - June 18, 2011 Artists from Eastern Europe quite often seem to misunderstand the critical role art has come to play in the West. Instead of openly protesting or subverting the rules of capitalist society they apparently succumb to the seduction of luxurious commodities and shamelessly seek material success. The works of Anetta Mona Chisa & Lucia Tk�cov� address the Eastern European plunge into capitalism by way of the early avant-garde strategy of using everyday life as material to be transformed. Just like the artists' own socialist past capitalism is thus taken as utter reality to be reworked. Not unlike, for instance, Alexander Rodchenko in Paris, Chisa & Tk�cov� let themselves be seduced by the capitalist products and aesthetics. Yet they readily identify their potential for transformation - one that is able to destabilise not only the underlying capitalist logics but also Western modes of critique. The �Section of Material Culture� was a group lead by Vladimir Tatlin at the State Institute of Artistic Culture in Saint Petersburg. Instead of looking for entirely new objects Tatlin attempted to transform and modernise the most traditional and backward elements of the material culture of his contemporaries. Anetta Mona Chisa & Lucia Tk�cov� understand �material culture� in an even wider sense - as an attitude towards materiality and objectification. In their exhibition they address even the most persistent clich�s of art and life. They do this not by imagining utopian alternatives to them but by systematically practicing and exhausting these very clich�s in search of a possible change. (Dessislava Dimova) Anetta Mona Chisa (born in Nadlac, Romania, in 1975) and Lucia Tk�cov� (born in Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia, in 1977) collaborate since 2000. They both graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and currently they live and work in Prague.
