KIRSI MIKKOLA | Abschied der Lumpenliese MARK WALLINGER | MARK Opening on Saturday, Oktober 29, 2011, 6-9 pm. In her second solo exhibition at carlier | gebauer, Kirsi Mikkola evolves her paper world - the large format tactile painterly surfaces, she constructs from coloured and painted straps of pre-used newspaper cut-outs. In "Abschied der Lumpenliese" (Panhandlers Farewell) Mikkola takes up the tondo, used in Renaissance painting, to canvas its contemporary meaning. The Finnish artist Kirsi Mikkola, born in 1959, was already as a sculptor represented by carlier | gebauer in the 90ies. She returned to the gallery in 2010 after a long self-imposed hiatus. With MARK, Mark Wallinger presents an almost 2 hours long, digital slide show. He explores the artistic "I" as a constant mirror stage. In 2010 he drifted through the streets of his hometown, London, writing his own name, MARK on numerous stones, to than photograph them in a stereotyped frame. The De Pont Museum in Tilburg, Netherlands is showing Wallingers work from October 8. The core work of the show will be the famous installation State Britain, 2007, alongside According to Mark, the 100 chairs, that were presented at carlier | gebauer in 2010. Also, the painting series of I, 2007-2008 will be on display. |
