THE INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING PROJECT 8th September 2011 to 1st October 2011 Facilitated by Jonah Sack and Francis Burger in collaboration with: Josh Ginsburg, Sjaka Septembir, Sebastian Brockenhagen, James King, Christian Nerf, Michael Tymbios, Athi Monezeli Joja, Nathan Gates, Talya Lubinsky, Stuart Cairns, Anja de Klerk, Trasi Henen, Sean O'Toole, Jared Ginsburg, Rodan Haret, Kyle Morland, Lance Herman, Rangoato Hlasane of Keleketla! and Jamal Nxedlana of CUSS Monthly amongst others. The Independent Publishing Project will launch at blank projects as an installation in two parts featuring a collection of contemporary and historical South African publications and a working studio aimed at producing new conversations, connections and collaborative works. The books, booklets, zines and leaflets collected through the project advocate independent publishing as a first rather than a last resort. Looking at independent or small scale publishing as both a medium and a strategy, our interest in these items is part sentimental, part tactile and part political. Consumable but not commodified, these works traverse closely-knit networks as if by word of mouth, existing as intimate instruments of personal agency and freedom of thought. They create a space. They're also just good to carry around, to look or read, and to think about. The Independent Publishing Project will develop within the gallery space and close with an evening event on the 29th of September. Interviews and discussions between participants and others will be hosted sporadically throughout the run of the exhibition. Additional participation is encouraged and welcomed. Jonah Sack. b. 1978, Johannesburg. MFA Glasgow School of Art. Currently based in Woodstock, works as a full-time artist and was the 2009 fellow of the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts. Francis Burger. b. 1986 in Tshwane. MFA, University of Cape Town. Currently functioning as a researcher, artist, writer and part-time lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch. Based in Woodstock. OPUNTIARIUM - NO PRESENT by Alan Bogana 8th September 2011 to 1st October 2011 As the culmination of his two-month residency in Cape Town (hosted by Pro Helvetia and blank projects) visiting Swiss artist Alan Bogana will present an installation that integrates Opuntia cacti, especially realized for this exhibition. Bogana, who in the past produced several artworks with plastic plants, will create an ephemeral vivarium for living Opuntia cacti - a suggestive biosphere of sorts in which spaces are inclosed in spaces ad infinitum: to preserve life, as well as to preserve images of the future. The plants will become guinea-pigs for the artist's own projections. By leaving space for the unpredictable to occur, the works aim to create collisions between static and dynamic images and ideas, as well as to interrogate enclosed living systems. This installation is a continuation of Bogana's artistic reflection on the persistence of utopian dreaming and on thee unavoidable collision with the dynamism of complex systems.
