NORBERT PRANGENBERG Works 1984–2012 KIKI SMITH New Sculptures July 17–August 14, 2014 Please note our special opening hours in the summertime: Tue–Fri: 2–6 p.m. Sat: 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Summer break: August 15 until September 11, 2014 Coinciding with the group show Ceramic Spaces at the Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen and the exhitbition A Room for Prangenberg at the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, the gallery presents a selected group of works by Norbert Prangenberg. Since 1990, the painter and sculptor created so-called Figurs – large reclining and standing vessel-like sculptures made of clay that bear witness to his individual treatment of color and form. A group of small-scaled, colorfully-glazed ceramics from 1998 were only recently discovered in his estate; a selection of them is now on display for the very first time. The exhibition is completed by a group of faiences, made since 2003, the so-called Scenes, early drawings and oil paintings from his late career. In the skylight room, the gallery presents new works by Kiki Smith. The juxtaposition of the silver sculpture Return, the two bronze sculptures Flower Heads, she made at a traditional foundry in Tuscany, and the woodcut Frontier displays the multifacetedness of the artist‘s working methods. While the Flower Heads are inspired by Asian sculptures, Return refers to the artist‘s experiences in nature. The portrait Frontier belongs to a series of prints in which the light, symbolizing all living creatures, is the main topic. For more than three decades, Kiki Smith continuously surprises with new themes, that result from her personal experiences as well as from her view of art history. A wide range of artistic disciplines is characteristic for her work: reaching from drawing, sculpture and printmaking to stained glass and tapestry. Norbert Prangenberg, born 1949 in Rommerskirchen-Nettesheim, Germany, died 2012 in Krefeld, Germany. Professor at the Kunstakademie München from 1993 until 2012.
