Gallery Male work from the collection of Vince Aletti

White Columns is proud to present Male an exhibition of works drawn from the personal collection of curator, writer and The New Yorker photography critic Vince Aletti. Featuring more than 75 photographs, drawings, sculptures, and paintings the exhibition will juxtapose works by such celebrated figures as Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, and Peter Hujar, with works by emerging artists such as Colter Jacobsen, Paul P and Scott Treleaven, alongside anonymously authored images and flea market finds. United by subject each work depicts images of men, either individually or in groups Male presents a complex history of the acts of depiction and representation. Alettis eclectic approach to collecting, which conflates both historical and vernacular material, reveals a highly idiosyncratic and fiercely independent articulation of visual culture

White Room Bob Nickas Recent Acquisitions, Gifts, and Works from Various Exhibitions 1985-2007

White Columns is proud to present the first project in a new, occasional exhibition series, in which a curator will be invited to present a history of their exhibition-making process and collaborations with artists. The first project is by the New York-based independent curator and writer Bob Nickas. Since the early 1980s Nickas has organized more than 75 exhibitions in the United States and Europe. A former editor of Index magazine and curator at PS1, his is arguably amongst the most influential and mercurial - curatorial voices of the past 25 years. For his White Columns presentation Nickas will present a group of 30+ works by artists he has included in exhibition projects since 1985 (inc. Richard Aldrich, Trisha Donnelly, Steven Parrino, and Walter Pfeiffer, amongst others.) Parallel to the exhibition White Columns will publish a scrap-book publication of material drawn from Nickass archives.

White Room Janice Guy

White Columns is pleased to present the first New York solo exhibition of Janice Guys vintage photographs. Produced in the late 1970s in Dusseldorf where she had studied with Bernd and Hilla Becher Guys photographs have not been seen since 1980, when she had her only solo exhibition in Cologne. Consisting of a group of unique, black and white vintage silver gelatin prints (which are often hand-tinted), Guys work depicts the artist self-consciously engaged in the act of photographing herself. Exploring questions of narcissism, objectification, and the processes of representation Guys works can be understood as part of a complex interrogation of identity-related image-making that includes work by such artist as Dan Graham, Hannah Wilke, and Urs Luthi, among others. Guys photographs first re-surfaced in the White Columns exhibition Early Work organized by White Columns, the artist Marilyn Minter, and curator Fabienne Stephan - in 2007. Guy abandoned art making in the early 1980s and is now better known as the co-director of the New York gallery Murray Guy

About Studio Voltaire
Studio Voltaire is the first and only artist-led gallery and studio complex in South-West London. Established in 1994, The organisation has developed a reputation for supporting artists at a pivotal stage in their careers through an ambitious public programme of exhibitions, commissions, live events and offsite projects. We have most recently worked with Spartacus Chetwynd, Chris Evans, Thea Djordjadze, Liam Gillick, Dawn Mellor, Jimmy Robert, Allison Smith and Joanne Tatham & Tom OSullivan. Our forthcoming exhibition programme for 2008/9 includes solo commissions by Nairy Baghramian, Maria Pask, Donald Urquhart and Cathy Wilkes, as well as offsite projects at Transmission, Glasgow and ICA, London.

Forthcoming education projects include a long-term project with artist Barby Asante working with groups of older people and Avant-Gardening, a cross platform arts project designed to help younger people gain a better understanding of environmental and sustainability issues. Additionally, we provide a much-needed resource of affordable studios to over 50 London based artists.
