ALEXEY KALLIMA CLOSED PARTY OPENING: December 12th, 2008, 7 P.M. December 13th, 2008 - January 31st, 2009 GALERIE VOLKER DIEHL is proud to announce its second solo exhibition Closed Party by Alexey Kallima, a Chechen artist living in Moscow since 1999 and one of the most important Russian artists of our time. This exhibition will feature the artists most recent work. Kallimas previous work evolved around the themes of suppression and politics. Recurring are the Chechen soldiers appearing as athletes dressed in distinguished athletic brand outfits. Vested with Kalashnikovs, their frail physical state contrasts the violence expressed with the arms and designates them as lonely people. As Kallima describes in his own words: I am against struggle. It is better to engage in sports than in fights. All is much more interesting when everything becomes a joke. In this exhibition, humor becomes a denotative factor. Kallima transforms recognizable male German personalities into extravagant characters reminiscent of romantic hippies by painting them with beards. The accumulation of these images turns into a hippie reunion or festival, as described by Kallima. The original setting of an exclusive private V.I.P. party is kept the personalities are being photographed by paparazzi drawn on the wall. Alexey Kallima uses German mass media photographs, newspapers and popular magazines, then digitally manipulates each image and works the images with pencil or fluorescent paint. These people standing in the public eye that normally are inaccessible become easy to engage with and go into a dialogue with them. The bearded guests seem to enjoy the reunion far more than their public counterparts. The visitor becomes an integral part of the setting locating himself between eager photographers and pretentious people on the other side. In this presentation, Kallima takes an ironic view on the persecution of the public persona as well as of the posing for the public eye. Alexey Kallima was born in Groznyy in 1969 and currently lives and works in Moscow. Upon graduation from the University of Krasnodar he opened the France Gallery. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide including the Moscow Biennial and Moscopolis at Espace Louis Vuitton in Paris.
