Cathy Wilkes 11th April 24th May 2009, Thursday Sunday 12 - 6pm Preview: Thursday 9th April 2009, 7 9pm Please note: The gallery will be closed 10th, 12th April for Easter, but will be open on Easter Saturday Studio Voltaire is pleased to present a new commission by the Glasgow based artist, Cathy Wilkes. The exhibition will be the artists first solo presentation in London since 2001. Cathy Wilkes' work is characterised by the creation of a slowly emerging personal vocabulary of found objects, sculptures and paintings that the artist makes and re-makes in evolving assemblages and environments. Wilkess installations contemplate narratives and personal recollections but refute resolution and embody a struggle to communicate what is often inexpressible, often with a sense of loss and suspension. Operating within areas of practice that historically have been maledominated, such as the readymade, Minimalism and Arte Povera, Wilkes infects them with distinctly female concerns. At the heart of this practice is a search for the associative meaning of objects, one that may lead Wilkes beyond the physical world and yet relentlessly returns to it. Solo exhibitions include The Modern Institute, Glasgow (2008, 1999); Milton Keynes Gallery (2008); Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch, Berlin (2007, 2004); Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2004), SMAK, Ghent, Belgium, Migros Museum, Zurich (both 2002); Cubitt Gallery, London (2001) and Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2001). Wilkes was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2008 and was one of four artists representing Scotland at Venice Biennale in 2005 as a part of Selective Memory. We would like to invite you to kindly consider supporting Studio Voltaire by joining our Benefactors Scheme. As well as supporting one of Londons leading independent galleries, membership of the scheme offers an exclusive tailor-made programme of events. Studio Voltaire is a registered arts and educational charity, which self-finances around 35% of its income through studio rents. The remaining balance is secured through public funding, trusts and foundations, and individual and corporate giving. Every donation, however modest, collectively makes a significant difference to the organisation. The money raised by the Benefactors Scheme directly supports the further development of the Education, Exhibition and Studio Programmes and the continued running of the organisation. Your donation will play a vital role in helping achieve the vision and ambition of one of London's most important spaces. The scheme provides the opportunity to become further involved with the organisation and offers special artist-led events unique to the gallery as well as other benefits. Our forthcoming benefactors events programme includes a special performance event by Spartacus Chetwynd and a talk by Lizzie Carey-Thomas (Curator - Contemporary British Art, Tate Britain) to coincide with the forthcoming Cathy Wilkes commission. In the current uncertain economic landscape, the importance of not for profit spaces like Studio Voltaire comes into even greater focus. Established in 1994, the organisation has developed a reputation for supporting artists at a pivotal stage in their careers through a varied and ambitious public programme of exhibitions, commissions, live events and offsite projects. Studio Voltaire has produced exhibitions and commissions with a number of key international artists such as Simon Bedwell, Nicholas Byrne, Spartacus Chetwynd, Thea Djordjadze, Ruth Ewan, Liam Gillick, Dawn Mellor and Joanne Tatham & Tom OSullivan, and a number of performance events with Emma Hedditch, Jimmy Robert, Maria Pask and Donald Urquhart. In recent years, UK galleries have been working with significant commercial pressures and expectations to satisfy large audiences. In this context, it is rare for artists to find opportunities to produce work in an open yet critically constructive environment. Over the past few years, we have gained a track record for offering substantial critical and practical support to artists in developing new work on their own terms. For further information on the benefits of joining the scheme or to join online, please visit http://www.studiovoltaire.org/support or contact Joe Scotland on 020 76221294 or joe @studiovoltaire.org to receive an information pack. Studio Voltaire has become one of the most energising spaces in London. Its ad-hoc approach and knack for spotting young talent makes it a formidable presence on the citys art scene. The Guardian Studio Voltaire is a vital organisation that provides a unique platform for artists and projects that might otherwise remain homeless. Their programmes are required viewing for anyone interested in visual culture. Matthew Higgs, Director, White Columns, New York Studio Voltaire is in Clapham, William Wilberforce used to live in Clapham, I'd like to have met him. And I'd like to have known Lavender Hill when Lavender was grown there... But at least I have witnessed the amazing goings on at Studio Voltaire... a veritable hotbed of outrageous, ground breaking, inventive art! Spartacus Chetwynd, artist A unique gallery with a fresh and exciting programme of shows, events and performances. I cherish the support they provide to international young talents through their studio programme and the opportunities they give younger artists to exhibit their works with loose boundaries. The contribution they make with such limited resources is admirable and the energy of the space is unique. There is a real sense of freedom, potential and infinite possibility that I felt the first time I walked in, and that made me want to be part of it. Valeria Napoleone, Patron and Collector Studio Voltaire has spearheaded the recent renaissance of London's vibrant history of alternative spaces. Anticipating the exciting new leadership at spaces such as Chisenhale Gallery and The Showroom. Studio Voltaire has become a South London lightning rod for artists, curators, critics and collectors.
