Continuing our commitment to new international art, studio1.1 is pleased to welcome back Latvian artist Vineta Kaulaca, with new paintings specially created for the space. Although she has exhibited throughout Europe and in both New York and Los Angeles, this will be her first solo UK show. Over thirty paintings will cloak walls and even ceiling in a stuttering cinematic timeshift of images that as a whole question how we position ourselves in front of the world.

Kaulaca's work expands in paint the perceptual ambiguities of the snapshot photograph, using multiple, subtly changed and repeating canvases to explore the camera's involuntary memory. Duration rather than narrative is extended in both the painting and the looking; akin to Robbe-Grillet's literary enterprise. Kaulaca asks whether paint can hold time without falsity. As we look we are momentarily aware of something we have missed, and look again. Yet It is the same except that Time itself has eluded us. The time in painting and the time in looking. Again.

Re-creating the experience of the cinema in paint is difficult enough. In choosing to remain within the painted canvas rather than submit to what might seem to be the imperatives of a video installation, Kaulaca makes certain that we are aware of the daring of her project. (The Angel of History in Kaulacas paintings is replaced by the rear-view mirror). Painting the shots as they pass across our mindscreen.
