'The Humiliations of Man: Le Salon des Refuses (The Fall) Damian Griffiths studio1.1 artist in residence 2010 inaugural show 11 - 14 March 2010 Private view: Thursday 11th March, 6 - 9pm We are very pleased to announce our third Artist in Residence at studio1.1. Damian Griffiths will be presenting a series of 5 weekend shows throughout the year under the title The Humiliations of Man Having shown Damian in 2008 in a solo show In the Way of Things we have asked him back with to further analyse the photographic image. While the means of presentation will differ greatly, the subject will be constant - man and his undoing. And the agent of this humiliation is the photograph and its insistent and problematic relationship to power and production; its existence as image, object and concept. HoM will start with Show 1: 'Le Salon des Refuss (the fall)' The work I propose to make for this series of exhibitions will attempt to find new ways of making and discussing art. The work will not be against language, but resistant to it. I want to make apparent the tautology of most art writing. It feels important that if I am to start a project entitled the Humiliations of Man I should include myself in these humiliations from the very beginning. I am part of the problem. In the front room of the gallery will be a selection of works that document my aborted attempts to re-make Marcel Duchamps The bride stripped bare by her bachelors, even (the Large Glass). The canvas is not a window onto the world; it is transparent, the duty of art is not mimesis, we are not fooling anyone. This is how I feel about some aspects of photography, though I have yet to create this idea through photography. In the back room will be a collection of naked self-portraits and other erotic works. studio1.1 57a Redchurch St London E2 7DJ tubes: Liverpool St / Old St bus: 8, 26, 35, 47, 48, 149, 344, 388 email: [email protected] tel: 07952 986696 web: http://www.studio1-1.co.uk open: Wednesday to Sunday 12-6 pm or by appointment |
