BRIAN CHALKLEY JACQUELINE UTLEY CHARLES WILLIAMS 8 - 31 May 2015 private view Thursday 7 May 6 - 9pm The Unreliable Narrator is a staple of 20th Century fiction and indeed a cliche of the 21st. But the stories pictures tell us have become less nuanced, and uncertainty has become one-dimensional, all in order to shore up the self-confidence of what is the newly Unreliable Reader. Utley, Chalkley, Williams: each of them occupies a more delicate position not on a spectrum of narrative partiality, matching to a greater or lesser extent what we imagined we'd be seeing, but each stand on a tangent upon a circle, a circle of concern for the ambiguities of the human condition, concern for everyday life... but whose? An un-rehearsed performance in which we all wait for our cue. All of us in turn bring our own unease, and are disquieted from our own viewpoint. These artists re-introduce us to the anxiety of identity and the bold circumspection that characterised photography in the 70's. Their figuration is on deliberately shaky ground - they give no easy answers to the questions of what/where/who we expect from narrative painting or reportage. Brian Chalkley's practice incorporates painting, performance and video work and he is currently the MA Fine Art Couse Director at Chelsea, his practice is an ongoing discussion of gender, identity and sexuality. Jacqeline Utley's last project, 'Obscure Secure' (with Hayley Feild and Claudia Boese) showed their own work alongside 20th Century woman artists in the Ipswich Council collection at the Ipswich Museum. Charles Williams was a founder and is an Ex-Member of the Stuckists. Born in Illinois U.S.A., he lives in Faversham, Kent, and lectures at Canterbury University. -- studio1.1 57a Redchurch St London E2 7DJ tubes: Shoreditch High St/Liverpool St/Old St bus: 8, 26, 35, 47, 48, 149, 344, 388 email: [email protected] tel: 07952 986696 web: http://www.studio1-1.co.uk open: Wednesday to Sunday 12-6 pm or by appointment |
