HREINN FRIDFINNSSON MAY 3-JUNE 14, 2008 Galerie Nordenhake is pleased to present an exhibition with new works and elaborations of previous projects by conceptual artist Hreinn Fridfinnsson. The artists gained prominence as a leading figure on the Icelandic avant-garde after co-founding the artist group SUM in 1965. A major retrospective of Fridfinnsson's work, documenting his ongoing influence for a younger generation of artists, was on view at the Serpentine Gallery in London and the Reykjavik Art Museum in 2007 and is currently travelling to other Scandinavian institutions. Fridfinnsson's art is rooted in his memories and experiences of his native Iceland and its contrasting landscapes. At times, he echoes the lyricism of a wandering bard, recounting legends, rumors, secrets, and dreams, sometimes telling a story, other times describing a place or an event. All these aspects are embodied by his new photographic series Second House. The images are a documentation of a further development of his House Project from 1974, an installation inspired by the tale of an eccentric Icelander who built a house inside out. Wallpaper, framed pictures and curtains were all mounted on the exterior of the building. Fridfinnsson developed it into a poetic attempt to contain the whole world in an object and built a reversed house on a lava field outside of Reykjavik. He documented the process with the intention that the resulting photographs should be the art piece, not the house itself. For Second House, which has been recently built in the park of Domaine de Kergu�hennec, Centre d'Art Contemporain, Fridfinnsson turned the original house back into a 'normal' one, a sculptural intervention accessible only through the gaze. From the windows the viewer can see three photographs of the Icelandic house and the metal model of the third and final stage of the House Project, now reduced to a three-dimensional drawing. The model has no walls, no more inside and outside, denying in this way any reference to a specific time or space. It floats in the otherwise empty space leaning on a meteorite, an extraterrestrial material without any kind of cultural reference or background. This object contains its past, the immanency of its present and the potentiality of its future. For Light, Shadow and Dust (1994), is also a further elaboration of a previous project. The work is composed of a series of nine glass shelves, to which gold leaf has been applied. Its reflective surfaces showcase the subtle dynamics of natural phenomena over time. Alongside this work Fridfinnsson presents Paris March 2008, a collection of black and white snap-shots from Paris, depicting some of its most stereotyped spots, equally affirming and transcending the notion of the 'touristic gaze'. A balance between the everyday and the magical occurs, for example, in Untitled (2008), a holographic installation representing a Roman amphora held by a woman. From a frontal perspective the object seems standing still, but when the viewer moves around it, he starts noticing how the two hands move the vase to pour water out of it. In this case holography's potential to show multiple sides and angles of an object allows the artist to give the illusion of a minimal action and its time. The diversity of media, which Fridfinnsson utilizes, consistently reflects the artist's complex visual language, each work imbued with simultaneous instances of humour and wonder. Born in 1943 in Baer D�lum, Iceland, Hreinn Fridfinnsson has been living in Amsterdam since 1971. He has had solo exhibitions at: Malm� Konsthall (2008); Reykjavik Art Museum and Serpentine Gallery, London (both 2007); Domaine de Kerguehennec, Centre d'Art Contemporain, Bignan, and Kyoto Art Center (both 2002). In 1993 he exhibited at the National Gallery of Iceland, Reykjavik (1993) and represented Iceland at the 45th Venice Biennale. His work has also been featured in group shows including Material Time/ Work Time/ Life Time, Reykjavik Arts Festival (2005), Eblouissement, Jeau de Paume, Paris (2004), Norden, Kunsthalle Wien, the Carnegie Art Award, (both 2000), Sleeping Beauty-Art Now, Scandinavia Today, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1983). In 2000, the artist was the recipient of the prestigious Ars Fennica prize. Hreinn Fridfinnsson has been exhibiting with Galerie Nordenhake since 1989. JUNI 2008 Hreinn Fridfinnsson pr�sentiert in seiner Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Nordenhake neue Arbeiten sowie Aus- und �berarbeitungen von �lteren Projekten. Der isl�ndische Konzeptk�nstler wurde als eine der f�hrenden Vertreter der isl�ndischen Avantgarde bekannt, nachdem er 1965 die K�nstlergruppe SUM mitgegr�ndet hatte. Die im letzten Jahr zusammengestellte umfassende �berblicksausstellung, die in der Serpentine London und im Kunstmuseum Reykjavik zu sehen war und derzeit weiter durch Skandinavien wandert, demonstriert das nachhaltige Interesse auch j�ngerer K�nstlergenerationen an seiner Arbeit. Fridfinnssons Kunst ist stark durch Erinnerungen und Erlebnisse aus seinem Geburtsland Island und dessen kontrastreiche Landschaft gepr�gt. Zeitweise �bernimmt er den Lyrizismus eines wandernden Barden: Er gibt Legenden oder Ger�chte, Geheimnisse und Tr�ume wieder, erz�hlt ein anderes Mal Geschichten oder beschreibt einen Ort oder ein Ereignis. Seine j�ngste photographische Serie House Projekt vereint alle diese Aspekte. Die Bilder dokumentieren die Weiterentwicklung seines ber�hmten House Projekt von 1974. Die Installation geht auf die Geschichte eines exzentrischen Isl�nders zur�ck, der sein Haus umgekehrt baute und die eigentliche Innenseite des Hauses, die Tapeten, gerahmten Bilder und Vorh�nge au�en angebrachte. Fridfinnsson �bernahm den poetischen Versuch, die ganze Welt in ein Objekt zu fassen und baute auf einem Lavafeld au�erhalb Reykjaviks ein von innen nach au�en gekehrtes Haus. Er dokumentierte den Proze� und stellte die Photos als das eigentliche Kunstwerk aus. F�r den Park des Centre d'art Contempoarain Domaine de Kergu�hennec verwandelte er Anfang des Jahres das Geb�ude wieder in ein �normales" zur�ck. Das Innere dieses Second House l��t sich nur durch die Fenster erblicken. Dort sind drei Photos des House Project von 1974 zu sehen sowie ein kleines Metallmodell des dritten und nunmehr letzten Stadiums des Projekts. Das Modell besitzt keine W�nde und damit auch kein Innen und Au�en. Fridfinnsson reduziert das Haus auf eine dreidimensionale Umri�zeichnung und eliminiert Referenzen an eine Zeit oder einen spezifischen Ort. Plaziert auf einen Meteoriten, einem au�erirdischen Material frei von jeglichen kulturellen Bez�gen, schwebt es im sonst leeren Innenraum und vereint in sich seine Vergangenheit, die Immanenz seiner Gegenwart und die Potentialit�t seiner Zukunft. Bei der Installation For Light, Schadow and Dust (1994) handelt es sich um die Ausarbeitung einer �lteren Arbeit, die aus neun mit Blattgold ummantelten Glasregalen besteht. Die Regalfl�chen fangen Reflexionen aus dem Umgebungsraum auf und veranschaulichen so die subtile Dynamik nat�rlicher Ph�nomene und deren zeitliche Ver�nderung. In einer Reihe von Schwarzwei�-Schnappsch�ssen mit dem Titel Paris March 2008 zeigt der K�nstler typische, fast zum Klischee erstarrte Orte Paris' in einer Weise, die den touristischen Blick gleichzeitig zu bekr�ftigten und zu �berschreiten scheint. Die f�r Fridfinnssons Kunst so typische Balance aus Allt�glichem und Magischem ereignet sich in seiner j�ngsten Installation: Ein gro�es Hologramm, auf dessen Vorderseite eine von H�nden gehaltene r�mische Amphore zu sehen ist, h�ngt frei im Raum. Bewegt man sich um das Hologramm herum, geraten die beiden H�nde in Bewegung und beginnen Wasser aus der Amphore zu gie�en. Fridfinnsson nutzt die M�glichkeiten des Mediums verschiedene Seiten und Winkel eines Objektes zu zeigen, um die Illusion einer einfachen Handlung und ihres zeitlichen Verlaufs zu erzeugen. Die Medienvielfalt der ausgestellten Werke belegt die Komplexit�t von Fridfinnssons visueller Sprache, mit der er Arbeiten zu formulieren vermag, die gleicherma�en von Humor und Staunen durchdrungen sind. Hreinn Fridfinnsson wurde 1943 in Baer D�lum, Island geboren und lebt seit 1971 in Amsterdam. Er hatte u.a. Einzelausstellungen in der Malm� Konsthall (2008), Reykjavik Art Museum und Serpentine Gallery, London (beide 2007), Domaine de Kerguehennec, Centre d'Art Contemporain, Bignan (2002), Kyoto Art Center (2002) und der National Gallery of Iceland (1993) und dem Institute of Contemporary Art, Amsterdam (1992). 1993 repr�sentierte er Island auf der 45ten Biennale von Venedig. Seine Arbeit wurde zudem in zahlreichen Gruppenausstellungen gezeigt, wie Material Time/Work Time/Life Time, Reykjavik Arts Festival (2005), Eblouissement, Jeau de Paume, Paris (2004), dem Carnegie Art Award (2000) und Sleeping Beauty-Art Now, Scandinavia Today, Guggenheim Museum, New York (1983). 2000 wurde er mit dem Ars Fennica Preis ausgezeichnet. Hreinn Fridfinnsson stellt seit 1989 in der Galerie Nordenhake aus.
