En 1998, � l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Winchester o� nous nous sommes rencontr�s, Christian Ward avait entrepris une s�rie de paysages d�sertiques compos�s � partir de photographies, mais surtout de tr�s nombreux croquis/dessins, r�alis�s lors d'un voyage en autostop � travers le Parc National des Arches dans le d�sert de l'Utah. Un an plus tard, pendant l'accrochage de notre Degree Show/exposition de fin d'�tudes, je me souviens lui avoir reproch� vivement l'usage d'un jaune si acide qu'il m'emp�chait presque de regarder la toile en face. Il me r�pondit simplement, � et tu penses que �a fait quoi la r�verb�ration du soleil sur le sable ? �. Le jaune de Christian n'avait rien de naturaliste, mais son exp�rience du paysage �tait restitu�e. Ce jour-l�, j'ai eu l'impression de comprendre la peinture un peu mieux. C'�tait une chose tr�s simple (�vidente m�me, si je m'�tais int�ress� � C�zanne un peu plus qu'� Schwitters) mais que je n'avais jamais pr�cis�ment r�alis�e.

De 1999 � 2002, Christian �tudie � Londres, � la prestigieuse Royal Academy of Arts. C'est l� qu'il entame les s�ries de peintures qui le feront rapidement conna�tre sur la sc�ne londonienne puis internationale. Pourtant, � l'exception d'une exposition collective au Consortium � Dijon en 2006 et de quelques expositions que j'ai moi-m�me organis�es, son travail n'est gu�re visible en France ; en cela il ne fait pas exception, les oeuvres de Chris Offili, Tomma Abst ou Peter Peri, ne le sont pas plus. Il y a visiblement des peintures que l'on juge bon de n'exposer qu'avec de la peinture ; quelle dr�le d'id�e.
Sur des tr�s grands formats horizontaux sont repr�sent�s de vastes paysages imaginaires, franchement psych�d�liques, dont la construction par �tagement de plans successifs renvoie ouvertement � la peinture sino-japonaise. Ses propres origines japonaises, tout comme le grand int�r�t qu'il porte � la peinture impressionniste, l'ont tr�s vite familiaris� avec ce pan de l'histoire de l'art que l'occidentalocentriste r�gnant continue de consid�rer trop souvent comme une simple curiosit�.
Apr�s un voyage sur l'�le de Yakushima, dont la v�g�tation luxuriante a servi de mod�le � Hayao Miyasaki pour la for�t de Princesse Mononoke, Christian Ward entame la s�rie des Cave Paintings, ces peintures de grottes dans lesquelles il invente et explore les cavit�s d'o� jaillissent les cascades de ses grandes compositions.

La particularit� de la peinture de Christian Ward tient � l'intrication des motifs et des proc�d�s picturaux. La brume et les mousses qui se confondent souvent sont tamponn�es avec une brosse � poils durs. Plus remarquables, les d�grad�s de couleurs des rochers, des plans d'eau et des cascades sont pr�par�s sur la palette et r�alis�s d'un seul coup de brosse. Tandis que les sillons concentriques que laissent les poils dans la peinture � l'huile �voquent in�vitablement le ratissage des jardins Zen, la technique rappelle certaines oeuvres de Bernard Frize autant que le fameux pr�cepte chinois de l'Unique trait de pinceau qui n'autorise aucun repentir.
� l'int�rieur des grottes, ces d�grad�s color�s ne sont pas al�atoirement distribu�s, ils correspondent � diverses sources lumineuses color�es (souvent visibles dans l'image) dont la disposition est rigoureusement �tablie au stade de l'esquisse. Chez Christian Ward, les infinies possibilit�s de l'imaginaire sont contraintes par une � peinture de pr�cision �, une grammaire picturale qu'il a pris soin d'�laborer, de complexifier au fil des ann�es.

� partir de 2005, apparaissent de nouveaux paysages d�sertiques. � en juger par la pr�sence des m�mes rochers �trangement color�s, ceux-ci sont li�s aux grands espaces japonisants par l'interm�diaire des grottes, qui seraient alors des tunnels, des passages. Dans ces d�serts jaune p�le se dressent des constructions, des maisons, des cabanes, des totems ou des sculptures, des assemblages de rochers dont on ne sait jamais tr�s bien s'ils sont l'ouvrage de la nature ou des hommes qui apparaissent de plus en plus fr�quemment dans les d�serts aussi bien que dans l'humidit� de ses paysages orientaux.

Parall�lement aux derniers d�veloppements des Cave Paintings et des peintures de d�serts, Christian Ward a pour la premi�re fois choisi d'int�grer � une exposition personnelle une large s�lection de dessins qui se divisent en deux grandes cat�gories : d'un c�t� ceux qui pr�c�dent les peintures, les pr�m�ditent, de l'autre ceux qui les suivent et qui pourraient bien passer pour les productions des myst�rieux personnages qui les peuplent.

In 1998, at the Winchester School of Art where we met, Christian Ward was working on a series of desert landscapes made after photographs as well as numerous drawings he sketched while hitchhiking through the Arches National Park in Utah.
One year later, while installing our degree show, I recall criticising his use of a yellow so acidic and bright that it was almost impossible to look at the canvas. He simply replied "how do you think the reflection of the sun on the sand looks like?". Christian's yellow was meant to render his experience of the landscape rather than look naturalistic. That day, I think I began to understand painting a little better. It was something very simple (almost evident, if I had showed more interest to Cezanne instead of Schwitters) but that had not yet occurred to me.

Between 1999 and 2002, Christian studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London. There, he began his series of paintings, which got him a name in the international London art scene. In France however, except for a group show at the Consortium in Dijon in 2006 and for a few shows I organised myself, his work has barely been displayed; in this, he is not exception, as Chris Offili, Tomma Abts or Peter Peri are not shown any more. It seems that there are paintings that one judge best to only present with other paintings; what a funny idea.
He depicts vast imaginary and truly psychedelic landscapes, on large horizontal canvases, which he renders from a successive layered construction of grounds openly referring to Sino-Japanese paintings. From Japanese descent and with an interest for Impressionism Art, he got rapidly familiarized with this part of art history, which the ruling occident-centric continues to consider too often as a mere curiosity.
After a trip to the island of Yakushima, whose luxurious vegetation was used by Hayao Miyasaki as a model for his forest in Princess Mononoke, Christian embarked on his cave painting series. He invents and explores fictitious grottos, whose cavities release cascades in his vast composition.

The particularity of Christian's paintings originates from his intricate motifs and technique. The mist and moss, often blending into the landscape, are often dabbed on with a hard brush. Most remarkably, the colour graduation of rocks, stretches of water and cascades are prepared on his palette and completed in one unique brush stroke. Whereas the concentric tracks left behind by the hairs in the oil paint undoubtedly recalls the raking of Zen gardens, the technique resembles equally some of Bernard Frize's paintings and the Chinese precept of the unique brushstroke precluding any corrections.
Inside the caves, the coloured graduations are not randomly distributed; they correspond to the various sources of light (often visible on the picture) whose arrangement is rigorously established at the sketching stage. With Christian Ward, the infinite possibilities of imagination are constrained to a "precise painting �, a pictorial syntax which the artist developed throughout the years.

Since 2005, new desert landscapes appeared. The grottos work as passages or tunnels between the strangely coloured rocks and the large japanizing scenery. Constructions, houses, huts, totems or sculptures, and rock conglomerations punctuate these yellow deserts. These structures raise the question of attribution, are they the work of nature or men? Who equally appear more and more regularly in the desert scenes and in the humid oriental panorama.

In parallel to Christian's recent development of his cave paintings and desert paintings, the artist chose to present for the first time in a solo show a selection of drawings. His works on paper can be divided into two categories; preparatory ones, premeditating the paintings and ones following which could pass as the creation of the mysterious characters inhabiting the scenes.
