La galerie Michel Rein est heureuse de pr�senter pour la premi�re fois une exposition personnelle de Rapha�l Zarka.
Cet artiste n� en 1977, dipl�m� des Beaux Arts de Paris et de la Winchester School of Art, auteur de deux ouvrages sur l'histoire du skate-board*, s'est distingu� par sa pr�sentation � la derni�re Biennale de Lyon. Intitul�e Riding Modern Art, l'installation comprenait une s�rie de photographies repr�sentant des skateurs � l'oeuvre sur des sculptures d'art moderne dans l'espace public, et une sculpture moderniste de Kobro. Ainsi apparaissait en filigrane un aspect important du travail de Rapha�l Zarka : l'int�r�t pour la migration des formes, des objets scientifiques de la Renaissance � la rampe de skate-board en passant par la sculpture moderniste.
Dans l'exposition � la galerie, l'artiste pr�sentera notamment Tautochrone, sculpture-r�plique d'un objet mis au point par Galil�e pour �tudier le mouvement pendulaire. Par la pratique de la r�plique, l'artiste nous d�voile plusieurs significations pour une m�me forme, comme pour jouer sur un inconscient collectif qui engloberait aussi bien la culture urbaine du 21�me si�cle que les inventions humanistes de la Renaissance.

Ratiocination, le titre de l'exposition choisi par l'artiste, illustre son go�t pour la polys�mie et le jeu. Il s'agit d'un terme emprunt� � Edgar Allan Poe que l'�crivain utilise pour d�crire ses contes les plus c�r�braux, tel Double Assassinat dans la Rue Morgue avec lequel il invente le genre du roman policier. � Ratiociner � c'est, au sens litt�ral et litt�raire, appliquer une m�thode ultra-rationnelle � la fois d'�criture et d'enqu�te. Au sens p�joratif, c'est aussi un abus de raisonnement, soit l'imitation du rationalisme sans contenu scientifique r�el.
Dans son travail plastique, Rapha�l Zarka joue avec cette pluralit� de sens. Il manie avec pr�cision l'art de la r�plique et de la reconstruction (comme en t�moigne sa sculpture reconstituant le Cabinet de Saint J�r�me tel qu'il est peint par Antonello Da Messina) ou de la d�duction (certaines de ses sculptures sont des formes trouv�es par d�duction � partir d'autres sculptures). En cela, il est fid�le au principe de � ratiocination � de Poe et se rapproche du mod�le d'artiste-architecte-scientifique cher � la Renaissance italienne (Da Vinci ou Alberti). Mais il est �galement attach� � l'erreur, � la po�sie et � la libre association des formes et des id�es, ce qui illustre le second sens du terme � ratiocination � et le rapproche du travail d'artistes de m�me g�n�ration comme Ryan Gander.
Si les Rhombicubocta�dres, sculptures-r�pliques que Zarka pr�sentera dans l'exposition, ressemblent � des objets scientifiques, ils font aussi figure de ph�nom�nes insolites lorsqu'ils apparaissent comme ready-made dans la s�rie de photographie Les formes du repos. On retrouvera une nouvelle fois ces objets dans une peinture r�alis�e par l'artiste
britannique Christian Ward pour l'exposition, ce qui renforce l'�tranget� de leur existence.
Entre science et fiction, le travail de Rapha�l Zarka donne lieu � de nombreuses interpr�tations, de la vision scientifico-historique qui ravira les �nerds�, � celle plus pop qui en fait l'ami des skateurs... La r�alit� de son travail se situe peut-�tre en de��, dans un entre-deux po�tique o� les formes sont lisibles � plusieurs degr�s sans que ces diff�rentes significations ne s'excluent.

Rapha�l Zarka a b�n�fici� de nombreuses expositions personnelles en France et � l'�tranger, dont Foundation � la Galerie 1m3 � Lausanne (commissariat : Julien Fronsacq), En Milieu Continu � la Galerie de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (2007) et Padova � la Vitrine � Paris (commissariat : Mathilde Villeneuve, 2008). L'exposition Ratiocination est le 4�me volet de cette s�rie d'expositions personnelles. Il a par ailleurs fait partie � Paris du projet d'exposition collective 220 jours (commissariat : Elodie Royer et Yoann Gourmel).

Galerie Michel Rein is pleased to be holding its first ever solo show of Rapha�l Zarka's work. This artist, born in 1977, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Winchester School of Art, and author of two books on the history of the skate-board*, came to notice as a result of his work presented at the last Lyon Biennial. Titled Riding Modern Art, the installation consisted of a series of photographs depicting skaters at work on modern art sculptures in public places, and a modernist sculpture by Kobro. A significant aspect of Rapha�l Zarka's work thus appeared between the lines: his interest in the migration of forms, from Renaissance scientific objects to the skate-board ramp by way of modernist sculpture.
In the exhibition at the gallery, the artist will be showing, in particular, Tautochrone, a replica sculpture of an object developed by Galileo to study pendulum movement. Through the replica, the artist reveals several meanings for one and the same form, as if to play on a collective unconscious encompassing 21st century urban culture as much as humanist inventions from the Renaissance.

Ratiocination, the title of the show chosen by the artist, illustrates his soft spot for things with many meanings, and games. It is a word borrowed from Edgar Allan Poe which the writer used to describe his most cerebral stories, such as The Murders in the Rue Morgue, with which he invented the genre of the detective novel. "To ratiocinate" means, in both the literal and the literary sense, to apply an ultra-rational method to both writing and investigation. In the pejorative sense, it also means a misuse of reasoning, otherwise put, the imitation of rationalism without any real scientific content.
In his plastic work, Rapha�l Zarka plays with this plurality of meaning. With much precision he handles the art of the replica and of reconstruction (as is evident from his sculpture re-creating the Study of St. Jerome, as painted by Antonella da Messina), and deduction (some of his sculptures are forms found by way of deduction from other sculptures). In so doing, he faithfully follows Poe's principle of "ratiocination" and tacks close to the artist-architect-scientist model dear to the Italian Renaissance (Da Vinci and Alberti). But he is also attached to error, poetry and the free association of forms and ideas, which illustrates the second meaning of the term "ratiocination" and likens him to the work of artists belonging to the same generation, like Ryan Gander.
The Rhombicuboctahedra--replica sculptures which Zarka will be showing in the exhibition-- may resemble scientific objects, but they also come across as unusual phenomena when they appear like readymades in the series of photographs titled The Forms of Rest. Once again we can find these objects in a painting produced by the British artist Christian Ward for the show, which serves to bolster the strangeness of their existence.
Somewhere between science and fiction, Rapha�l Zarka's work gives rise to many different interpretations, from a scientific-cum-historical vision which will delight nerds, to the more Pop vision adopted by the skaters' friend. The reality of his work is possibly situated this side of all this, in a poetic interstice where the forms can be read in several ways without these different meanings being mutually exclusive.

Rapha�l Zarka has had many solo shows in France and abroad, including Foundation at the Galerie 1m3 in Lausanne (curated by Julien Fronsacq), En Milieu Continu at the Gallery of the Nantes School of Fine Arts (2007), and Padova at La Vitrine in Paris (curated by Mathilde Villeneuve, 2008). The exhibition Ratiocination is the fourth part of this series of solo shows. He also took part in Paris in the group show project 220 jours (curated by Elodie Royer and Yoann Gourmel).
