La galerie Michel Rein est heureuse de pr�senter la quatri�me exposition personnelle d�Allan Sekula. Sa derni�re s�rie de photographies Shipwreck and Workers a �t� montr�e � la derni�re Documenta de Kassel (commissaires Roger Buergel et Ruth Noack, 2007). Deux expositions r�trospectives de l�artiste sont en pr�paration aux Etats-Unis et en Europe: � la Renaissance Society de Chicago (2008) et � la Zacheta Gallery de Varsovie (2009).

Notes pour l�exposition � la galerie Michel Rein, 2008

-Shipwreck & Workers (Naufrage et Travailleurs) : il s�agit de photos d�un monument � portable et temporaire � d�di� au travail, r�cemment install� en version ext�rieure dans Bergpark, sous le monument d�Hercule, � Kassel, pour la Documenta 12 (2007). Le �Naufrage� flottait sur un radeau dans le bassin de Neptune. Le visiteur devait gravir 500 marches pour voir les autres photos install�es de part et d�autre de l�escalier monumental.
�C�est du travail de regarder le travail�. Douze photos de travail et de travailleurs qui rappellent les douze travaux d�Hercule, le fou stakhanoviste de l�Antiquit�. Par contraste, qui oserait �riger un monument � M�d�e ?
Museum guards (Gardiens de mus�e) -l�un est po�te, le second dessinateur de bande dessin�- ils travaillent � la Henry Art Gallery de Seattle, o� Fish Story a �t� expos� en 1999.

-Travailler plus pour gagner plus : 3�me opus d�une s�rie de photos o� des phrases form�es de lettres d�coup�es sont appos�es sur une image d�un soudeur de chantier naval d�coupant de l�acier � Ensenada, Mexique (photo originale, 1996, de la s�rie Dead Letter Office, montr�e � la galerie Michel Rein en 1998). La premi�re version Alle Menschen werden Schwestern (Tous les hommes deviendront s�urs) a �t� montr�e � l�ext�rieur de la gare de Kassel pendant la Documenta 12. La seconde version s�intitule Los ricos destruyen el planeta (Les riches d�truisent la plan�te). Ces phrases, v�ritables slogans pour le 21�me si�cle, sont de rares occasions o� Allan Sekula juxtapose directement l�image et le texte, alors que ses �uvres assuraient d�ordinaire une relative autonomie aux deux �l�ments.

-Etudes Laotiennes : Allan Sekula a visit� Luang Prabang et la r�gion alentour en octobre 2005 et janvier 2006. Pendant ces visites il a pris des images pour un film intitul� A short film for Laos (Un court film pour le Laos), ainsi que pour une s�rie de photographies. Deux sont des diptyques : B-52 crater, qui montre un crat�re creus� par une bombe dans la Plaine de Jarres, une r�gion du Laos encore marqu�e par les bombes l�ch�es pendant la guerre du Vietnam. Whisper (Murmure) est le portrait d�une villageoise laotienne murmurant � l�oreille d�une amie. D�crivant ces images, Sekula �crit: � B-52 crater est la 3�me photographie que j�ai faite sur le mod�le du �split-basin� (bassin divis�), c�est � dire une d�pression de terrain circulaire prise � l�oblique, de sorte qu�elle apparaisse ovale ou elliptique, et divis�e en son centre par le cadre. Les deux autres sont Doomed Fishing Village of Ilsar (1993) de la s�rie Fish Story et Oil Recovery Pit, Lendo (2002) de Black Tide. La division de l�image par le cadre est une fa�on de �domestiquer� un �l�ment topographique, en lui donnant plus ou moins l�air d�un �vier de cuisine. La violence r�siduelle rendue par B- 52 crater, la trentaine d�ann�es qui sont pass�es depuis le choc assourdissant des explosions (on s�estimait heureux si on perdait seulement un tympan), m�ne � Whisper, un moment inaudible d�une conversation priv�e entre deux villageoise laotiennes. C�est une des nombreuses photographies que j�ai faites dans lesquelles entendre ou parler prend une place centrale comme dans Dockers listening (1999) de la s�rie Freeway to China. �

L�exposition sera compl�t�e par la projection du film A Short Film for Laos (2006) pr�sent� � la derni�re Biennale d�Istanbul (cur. Hou Hanru, septembre 2007).

Galerie Michel Rein is happy to present Allan Sekula�s fourth solo show at the gallery. Sekula�s recent series of photographs, Shipwreck and Workers, was shown at the last Documenta in Kassel (curators: Roger Buergel and Ruth Noack, 2007). Retrospective exhibitions of his works are in preparation in Europe and in the United States : at the Renaissance Society in Chicago (2008) and at the Zacheta Gallery in Warsaw (2009).

- Shipwreck and Workers: photos from a �portable, temporary� monument to labor, last installed outdoor in the Bergpark, below the Hercules monument in Kassel, for Documenta 12. The shipwreck floated on a raft in the Neptune Basin. The viewer climber over 500 steps to see the other photos flanking the stairs. It�s hard work to look at work. Twelve photos of work and workers to recall the twelve labors of Hercules, Stakhanovite-madman of the ancient world. By contrast, who would dare to erect a monument to Medea?

The Museum Guards�one a poet, the other a cartoonist�are working at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, where Fish Story was exhibited in 1999.

- Travailler plus pour gagner plus: from a series of happy-captioned ransom note overlays on a photo of a shipyard welder cutting steel in Ensenada, Mexico (original photo 1996, from Dead Letter Office, exhibited at galerie Michel Rein in 1998). Alle Menschen werden Schwestern (All people will be sisters) shown outside Kassel Wilhelmhoehe Bahnhof during Documenta 12. Second version: Los ricos destruyen el planeta (The rich destroy the planet). Rare Sekula foray into direct image-text juxtaposition rather than �relative autonomy� of the two elements. Slogans for the 21st century. Graphic design assistance: Ina Steiner.

- Lao Studies: Sekula visited Luang Prabang and the region surrounding the city in October 2005 and January 2006. During his visits, he shot footage for a film, titled A Short Film for Laos (2006), as well as a series of photographs. Two of the diptychs are B-52 Crater, which depicts a bomb crater in the Plain of Jars, a region of Laos that is still pockmarked with craters from bombs dropped during the Vietnam War, and Whisper, which portrays a Lao village woman whispering to a friend. Describing these photographs, Sekula has written: �B-52 is the third photograph I have made comprised of a �split-basin,� that is, a circular depression seen at an oblique angle so that it appears as an oval or ellipse and is divided evenly between two frames down the middle. The other two are Doomed fishing village of Ilsan (1993) from Fish Story and Oil recovery pit, Lendo (2002) from Black Tide. The divided frame is a way of �domesticating� a topographic feature, more or less treating it like a kitchen sink. The residual violence recorded in B-52 Crater, the thirty odd years that have passed since the ear-blasting shock of the explosions (one was lucky to lose only one�s hearing), leads to Whisper, a moment of inaudible private conversation between two Lao village women. This is one of a number of photographs I have made in which listening or speaking is central, such as Dockers listening (1999) from Freeway to China.�

A Short Film for Laos (2006), which was presented at the last Istanbul Biennial (curator: Hou Hanru, September 2007), will also be featured in the show.
