Seen Solo Show

From 29 May, 2010 to 26 June, 2010
Opening 29 May, 2010 from 6pm to 9pm

As a pioneer of the "Street Art" movement, an emblematic figure of the graffiti movement, SEEN becomes famous in the 70s on the New York artistic scene ; he actively participates in the emergence of the movement. From a very young age, he is already seen as a prodigy. At the age of 11, he tags his first trains. Later, he decides to revisit letters and hit the "Hollywood" sign in Los Angeles. In 1981, he takes part in the exhibition "New York/New Wave" at PS1 with Keith Haring and Andy Warhol among others. Considered as an icon of the graffiti movement, SEEN marks a whole generation by the strength of his creations and what he brought to this scene in terms of style. Still today, SEEN surprises by the virtuosity of his style and his creativity. His art is between the inheritance of the street which he claims in each of his works and a very graphic technical virtuosity. Apart from its works full of coloured lettering, in which hes become a real master, SEEN developed over the years a series of works on canvas, creative and personal. In this show, SEEN presents the three series of very meaningful works. For one, he inserts steel and theMetro Transit Authority logo as to remind us his golden relationship with the streets of NY as he puts it himself, "Graffiti is my life, always has been and will always be". On another level of the show one can discover the influence of the tattoo culture in Seen's life. Eventually, on the third level of the gallery SEEN offers a research work where he investigates abstraction. Beyond graffiti, beyond this school which continues to feed his work, SEEN proses above all a complete artist. Today, he is considered as one of the most talented artists of his generation by numerous fans.

Richard Mirando, aka SEEN, started spraypainting at age 9, in his uncle body shop. Coincidence? The garage is right behind the Line 6 train depot, and thats where he paints his first train car, at age 11. The following year, in 1973, he signs his first piece with the name SEEN. This is a highly competitive period in the graffiti train scene, with each writer engaged in outperforming the other in terms of quantity. SEEN executes top-to-bottoms with such dexterity and rapidity that he becomes officially known as The Godfather of Graffiti , a unique title. The title is still his today, due to the impressive quantity of pieces hes created and to his continuous inventivity in terms of style.
Precocity is SEENs leitmotiv. He paints his first canvas at the end of the 70s. In the early 80s, he meets Henry Chalfant (the photographer and producer of Styles Wars, the graffiti et Hip Hop culture cult movie) who invites him over to Europe to paint and show his work. He initially declines the offer, before accepting it. I painted my first canvas in 1979. At the time, I wasnt thinking about art, museum exhibits or anything like that. It was the last thing on my mind. So when in 1981, or 1982, Henry Chalfant said : lets go to Europe paint on canvas, I had no interest. He said he wanted to take several of us to Europe. Still refused. I told him Id miss the trains.
Eventually, SEEN heads over to Europe. In the early 80s, SEEN shows his canvas pieces in the incredibly alive new york scene. They also travel abroad. He gets offered the Yaki Kornblitt Gallery in Amsterdam, the Stellweg-Seguy gallery in New York, Suntory in Tokyo, as well as the "New York/New Wave" show at PS1 in1980 and the Louisiana Museum in Copenhague in 1984, next to artists like Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dondi, Quik, Blade and Lee. Despite his great exposure in Europe, and his constant travel, SEEN continues to cover the NY subway lines until 1989, even after most artists have dropped out of the race, due to MTAs major repression. Since, SEEN has had regular solo shows throughout the world, in Vancouver, San Fransisco, Londres, Tokyo, Paris and New York.
