Public Ennemy With : Mat COLLISHAW, Zhang DALI, Mounir FATMI, MALEONN, Joanna MALINOWSKA, Luc MATTENBERGER, Jean-Michel PANCIN, Jackie SUMELL, VHILS Curator : Barbara Polla and Magda Danysz This exhibition is a group show aiming at understanding who is ' the public enemy ' today through the questions of destruction, confinement or act of vandalism. “ What is the place for creativity in prison? How does one survive in prison? As British artist Sarah LUCAS, puts it : in prison the only freedom is freedom of imagination, so I thought let’s see what they are doing with this freedom there...” Barbara Polla adds. For Mat COLLISHAW the question of confinement is always present. From his beginnings, with the Bird-Song cycle, he put birds in a cage, he took away not only their freedom to fly but also to sing. In 2010, he focused his photo series on the death row prisoners’ last meal. Jean-Michel PANCIN chose prison as the subject of his work. The Avignon actual prison in France became the object of his artistic work. Jackie SUMELL created works in collaboration with Herman Joshua Wallace locked up in solitary confinement for now 38 years in Louisiana. This work answers to the simple question " what kind of house a man who lived in a 6x9m box for more than 30 years can dream about? " VHILS (aka Alexandre FARTO) on his side shows works made of destruction of walls with a jackhammer. The destruction is not an act of vandalism but he tries, by this technique, to redraw the urban archaeology. Nonetheless this act makes him, very often, considered as the “public enemy” . - Avec : Mat COLLISHAW, Zhang DALI, Mounir FATMI, MALEONN, Joanna MALINOWSKA, Luc MATTENBERGER, Jean-Michel PANCIN, Jhafis QUINTERO, Jackie SUMELL, VHILS Commissaires d'exposition : Barbara Polla et Magda Danysz Cette exposition tend à comprendre qui est aujourd’hui ‘l’ennemi public’ à travers les questions de destruction, d’enfermement ou d’acte vandale. « Quelle place pour la créativité en prison ? Comment survivre en prison ? Comme le dit si bien l’artiste britannique Sarah Lucas : “En prison la seule liberté est la liberté d'imagination, donc j'ai pensé, voyons ce qu'ils font avec cette liberté là... " » ajoute Barbara Polla. Dans l’œuvre de Mat COLLISHAW, la question de l’enfermement est récurrente. Dès le début de sa carrière, dans Bird-Song cycle, il enferme des oiseaux auxquels il ôte non seulement leur liberté de voler mais dont il limite également la liberté de chanter. En 2010, c’est le dernier repas des condamnés à mort américains qui fait l’objet d’une série de nature morte, il nomme alors ces œuvres du nom du condamné comme pour nous empêcher d’oublier qu’il s’agit bien du dernier repas de quelqu’un. Jean-Michel PANCIN choisit la prison comme sujet de son œuvre et le bâtiment architectural de la prison d’Avignon devient l’objet de son travail artistique. Jackie SUMELL propose une œuvre réalisée avec Herman Joshua Wallace, détenu pendant 38 ans au secret dans une prison de Louisiane. Cette œuvre, née de la question posée en 2003 par Jackie SUMELL à Herman Wallace "De quel genre de maison un homme qui a vécu dans une boite de 6x9m pendant plus de 30 ans peut-il rêver ? » offre encore une autre forme de réflexion sur le sujet. VHILS (Alexandre FARTO) quant à lui réalise des œuvres au marteau piqueur sur les murs de la ville. La destruction n’est pas un acte de vandalisme dans son travail et il cherche par cette technique à retracer l’archéologie urbaine mais ce geste le positionne bien souvent aux yeux de la justice comme ‘l’ennemi public’. |
