Jace Solo Show

Opening 7 May, 2011 from 6pm to 9pm

Magda Danysz Gallery - 78, rue Amelot - Paris 11

In his latest series, JACE presents his Electrocution School Cards. Inspired from illustrations dating from 1971 JACE found reinterprets them in an unprecedented way. The material he tampers with illustrates the perfect 70s way of life. Kids are served with the image a permed hair mother who invariably smiles beside the father figure. Here are the roles children will one day have to hold to serve the nation.

But then when one looks closely, the obvious becomes cruel, provocative and unbearable. While JACE keeps the innocence of these 70s illustrations he has added elements and details that reflect what the world has become. As intense as provocative, the works depict drug dealers selling weed to perfect housewifes, little girls slipping their hands into a priests cassock... The simplicity of the art makes these social trends a lot harder to bear. JACE offers here cruel look at the flaws of our contemporary society. As a fair warning, the artist gives us an electroshock.

With a complete series of 50 artworks never shown before, street artist JACE places himslef on the werge of becoming also a low brow or Pop Surrealist artist. As in Lowbrow art, mixing nave comic codes with our societys reality, one will find a sweet mix of humor and terror. JACE often makes sarcastic or even caustic drawings in which he draws up a lucid portrait of the French society.

Shepard Fairey - The Print Show

From 7 May, 2011 to 18 June, 2011
Opening 7 May, 2011 from 6pm to 9pm

Magda Danysz Gallery - 78, rue Amelot - Paris 11

Considered as "the most influential street artist of our time" by the Institute of Contemporary Art of Boston, Shepard Fairey (aka Obey) has always considered posters as a valuable form of art. Relentlessly he has pasted posters all over the world, renewing his visual codes through the years, building up a real language. Today his posters are world famous, became his graphic signature, instantly recognizable. In a show where about 200 prints have been gathered over a period of ten years, one ca, see the mazing amount of refrences and inspirations the artist uses. Mixing Soviet propaganda cause with heavy metal imagery, or psychedelic letterings makes it an incredible testimony of the rise of the graphic culture.

In his works, Shepard Fairey uses strong messages to make us think. His messages are often political, always committed and aim to demonstrate the power of the mass-media, advertisment, politics, in our society by using their own code. Since Shepard Fairey wrote his manifesto back in 1990 one can only understand better, after more than twenty years of activism, that him pasting "has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning".

Today, Shepard Fairey continues this approach, using his work as a platform of expression, no matter the means and media. Shepard Fairey is now in the collections of the most important museums such as Victoria and Albert Museum, London ; the MOMA, New York ; etc.
