Lyons Wier Gallery is also pleased to announce our participation in Volta 5 Basel from June 8th - 13th. We are featuring a solo position with Fahamu Pecou's latest works, "Black Presidential."

"Black Presidential" by Fahamu Pecou takes its charge from American culture's obsession with President and Mrs. Obama. Much has been made of the notion that the Obamas have redefined and reshaped the image of black Americans.

By a juxtaposition of gestures, including turning a painting on-end, Pecou makes commentary on the skewed prism and distortions created by popular media's notion that the Obamas are not only recreating the images of black people but also observes the fact that new stereotypes are being formed based on carefully choreographed images of the Obamas disseminated by the White House. Pecou's alter-ego character, "Fahamu Pecou is the Sh(i)t" takes on the role of the Black President and challenges previous stereotypes around Black Americans in popular culture as well as the new ones being fashioned around the Obamas.
