MICHAEL VISOCCHI
Winner of the JERWOOD SCULPTURE PRIZE 2009

Michael Visocchis proposal for Yield has been awarded the 2009 Jerwood Sculpture Prizes winning commission of 25,000. Yield will be produced as a largescale, permanent sculpture to be unveiled at the Jerwood Sculpture Park, in the grounds of Ragley Hall, Warwickshire in spring 2010.

For his proposal, Visocchi has taken scaled down models of electricity pylons found near Ragley and placed one on top of the other. Constructed in galvanized mild steel, the sculpture will stand as a contemporary monument to modern day technology and, at 18m in height, will be an impressive presence in the landscape. In choosing to take the form of the pylon as his Jerwood sculpture, Visocchi makes us think again, not only about the design of these structures, which so often we do not even notice in the landscape, but about the 21stcentury issues of climate change, carbon footprints and renewable energy.

Visocchi: The search to produce and transmit more and more energy is now acknowledged to be directly proportional to negative impacts on global climate. The paradox is, however, that pylons are a necessity for a successful and vital link in servicing communities around the country as we continue to consume more energy to satisfy increasingly complex lifestyles.

CAF PROJECT SPACE
Michael Ajerman
My Friends

Exhibition: March 3 April 20, 2009
Private View: 7 March
Open: Monday Friday 9 5pm, Saturday 11 3pm

My Friends, by Michael Ajerman is a large scale painting sited within the project space. The heavy, thick brushstrokes denote the time and reflection involved within Ajermans creative processes, and, despite the works apparent heaviness, the artist still captures the expression, movement and character of the subjects in the painting. The different elements of the work, the characters, the setting, his assertive mark making, have evolved in such a way that they assimilate, creating language and a distinctive personality.

NEW OUTDOOR PUBLIC ART COMMISSION
Barton Hargreaves
In Situ

March 2009 onwards
Open: daily
Launch date: Tuesday 10 March 4.30 8pm

Barton Hargreaves has been selected for a new Jerwood Space public artwork commission. The new work, titled In Situ, will be on show from March 2009 on the frontage of the building. Life size figures will appear to be jumping, climbing and interacting with the architecture whilst subtly emerging from the brickwork.

Barton Hargreaves graduated from an MA in Fine Art Printmaking at the Royal College of Art in 2007. He is currently printmaking fellow at the Royal Academy Schools. In his creative practice he combines traditional printmaking techniques, digital processes and lens-based media to make prints, drawings, videos and installations. Recently his work has examined the way that new technologies and the density of life in the city can act to separate us from our physical surroundings. His new work is in deliberate contrast to this. The figures become part of the fabric of the building and are formed from photographs of surfaces found around the streets of Southwark.

FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS
ANOPSEUDONONYMOUS
17/04/09 10/05/09

Five Hundred Dollars is a new temporary exhibition space opening with the generous support of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. For the inaugural show, fifteen artists have been invited to explore the possibilities of anonymity.

For some, anonymity is a liberation, permitting the new or hidden to surface; for others, it prompts questions about authorship, identity and disclosure. Working in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture and video, the un-named participants have chosen distinctive approaches: an established painter submits his practice to a series of arbitrary limitations which force him to work like someone else, a young couple collaborate for the first time and entertain the loss of individuality threatened by intimacy, whilst another artist addresses anonymity through the figure of an unidentified mourner at the funeral of a screen icon.

Together, the works in ANOPSEUDONONYMOUS constitute an ambitious experiment in namelessness, which is at once refreshingly coy and provocatively utopian.

ANOPSEUDONONYMOUS runs from 17th April to 10th May 2009 at Five Hundred Dollars, 12 Vyner Street, London, E2 9DG (nearest tube: Bethnal Green). Opening times: Friday to Sunday, 126pm, First Thursdays & by appointment. Contact: [email protected] www.fivehundreddollars.co.uk

Five Hundred Dollars is a temporary, artist-run space opening in April 2009. Over six months it will present a series of group and one-person shows, accompanied by a diverse programme of events. Offering an experimental exhibition environment, Five Hundred Dollars aims to encourage mid-career and emerging artists to develop their work in new and unexpected ways.

Roanne Dods, Director of The Jerwood Charitable Foundation writes: I adore each of these artists and we have had a lovely partnership with most of them in various ways over several years. So it is extremely exciting to see them opening up a new art-space in Bethnal Green in that vibrant East End of London where exciting new art is being created by a younger generation of artists who are almost household names.
