The Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Wimbledon College of Art have today released the short list of 77 artists for the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2007, which includes a first prize of 6,000, a second prize of 3,000, and two student awards of 1,000 each.
The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the countrys leading award in drawing, and is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition dedicated to drawing in the UK. Established in 1996 as the annual Cheltenham Open Drawing Exhibition it was renamed the Jerwood Drawing Prize when the Jerwood Charitable Foundation became the principal sponsor in 2001.
This years exhibition was selected by the following: Paul Bonaventura, Senior Research Fellow in Fine Art Studies, Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford University; Avis Newman, Artist; and Catherine de Zegher, Art Historian and Curator. The short list includes highly regarded, established artists as well as relative newcomers and students fresh from art school. Roanne Dods, Director of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, commented With an extraordinary submission of over 2600 entries, we were again thrilled by the interest that there is in drawing. There was no dilution of quality on the contrary, our experienced and judicious panel was firmly committed to presenting over 77 artists in this eleventh year of the Jerwood Drawing Prize. The range and breadth of the work is exhilarating.
The short listed artists will show their nominated drawings in an exhibition at the Jerwood Space, London SE1 from 19 September to 28 October 2007. The awards will be announced at 7.30pm on Tuesday 18 September 2007. The exhibition will then tour the UK, to galleries in Cheltenham, Glasgow, Bristol, Cardiff and Newcastle.
