26 April - 22 June 2013 Opening: Friday, 26 April, 4 - 9 pm
On the occasion of Gallery Weekend 2013 Johnen Galerie presents Kunstausstellung by Hans-Peter Feldmann. The focus of the exhibition is put on pictures stemming from different sources, mainly 19th and early 20th century paintings. In his Dreiergruppen (triads) Feldmann arranges three images of different traditional subject-matters and techniques. Each viewer may perceive and interpret these constellations in his or her own way. Thus images of clearly defined theme and content are integrated in a network of open and complex relationships. Feldmann continuously ties his work to the history of image production and its entire cultural spectrum, from fine art to mass production, from children’s books to photography and postcards. He is interested in which images are popular, held in esteem and collected by people at any given time. By way of painterly interventions he creates a new, contemporary context: red noses, crossed eyes and black eyes add a strikingly modern and humorous accent to the dusty and solemn images. Feldmann brings the stiff and conventional portraits back to life. Two sculptures complement the exhibition and demonstrate the wide range of Feldmann’s work: a pair of ivory-colored telephones from the 1960s are connected with a short cable. The telephones’ meaning and function to bridge long distances is cut off in an absurd way. A second sculpture shows a plaster replica of Schadow’s famous sculpture of princesses Luise and Friederike, but painted in bright colors. In so doing, Feldmann applies a somewhat vulgar Pop appeal of our time to Schadow’s „noble simplicity and quiet grandeur“. Feldmann’s jokes are direct, so that everybody can understand them, and the artist thus opens the exclusive art world to everybody.
Hans-Peter Feldmann was born in Düsseldorf in 1941. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions, lately at Deichtorhallen, Hamburg (2013), Serpentine Gallery, London (2012), Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York (2011), Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2010), Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2010) and Konsthall Malmö (2010). He lives and works in Düsseldorf.
Parallel to Kunstausstellung, exhibitions with works by Hans-Peter Feldmann will be on view at Wien Lukatsch and Galerie Mehdi Chouakri.
