Exhibition dates: 21 November 2008 - 24 January 2009

Hales Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming show Space Opera, 21 November 24 January 2009, new paintings by British artist Jane Harris.

For more than 15 years, Jane Harris has used the ellipse as the recurring formal motif for spatial and optical exploration in her work. Having the potential to be viewed simultaneously as two and three dimensional, the ellipse emerges enigmatically from a tightly controlled surface and the overall effect is seductive, yet restrained. Each painting is imbued with an individual character and elusive presence and with her introduction of metallic pigments, Harris has added more lustrous and reflective qualities to their surfaces.

Recently Harris has placed an even stronger emphasis on the spatial and optical qualities in her work. Stimulated by her move to South West France in 2006, she has found renewed pleasure in the relationship of surface to light.

As the exhibition title 'Space Opera' suggests, the interplay between and within each painting is finely orchestrated by Harris, through variations of the elliptical form, direction and scale of the brush strokes, tonal shifts and the dynamic qualities of the metallic colours. To appreciate fully the rewards of these paintings the viewer must experience them physically, perceiving at first hand the changes that occur through moving around the paintings and from the impact of light on surface.

Jane Harris has exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally. She has been the recipient of a number of prizes and awards including the Rootstein Hopkins Major Sabbatical Award (2004) and the Arts Foundation Painting Fellowship (1995). Solo shows include Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham (2007), the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, CT (2006), Southampton City Art Gallery (2001) and Jack Shainman Gallery, New York (2001). She has recently been invited to undertake two residencies: at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Connecticut, USA and Two Rooms Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand both to be taken up in 2010. Her next solo exhibition will be in April 2009 at the Galerie d'Ecole des Beaux Arts, Valence, France.

Harris work is included in many public and private collections around the world including the Arts Council collection (UK), Government Art Collection (UK), SAKs Fifth Avenue (USA) and Lieu d'Art et d'Action Contemporain (LAAC) de Dunkerque (France).

MIAMI 2008
Hales Gallery, Ronald Feldman Fine Arts and PIEROGI
Opening reception 2 December, 3-9pm

Hales gallery has been invited for the second year to present a show alongside two New York galleries Ronald Feldman Gallery and PIEROGI

The alliance between these galleries creates an exciting and dynamic environment where the artists are placed at the centre. The large industrial space allows scope for all three galleries to show adventurous work in the many rooms available and the result is more like a curated show than an art fair.

The warehouse is conveniently placed between The Ice Palace where NADA is held each year and the fantastic Rubell Collection. It also has a parking lot, which is useful if you plan to come by car.

Location:
2010 N Miami Avenue
Between N.W. 20/21st Street
Wynwood, Miami

Show dates:
Opening reception: 2 December, 3-9pm
3-6 December: 11am-8pm
7 December: 11am-6pm

For our part of the exhibition Hales Gallery will feature new series of works by some of the artists that we represent from Britain and the USA:

Trevor Appleson, Sebsatiaan Bremer, Ian Dawson, Katy Dove, Hew Locke, Laura Oldfield Ford, Bob and Roberta Smith and Jane Wilbraham.

Sebastiaan Bremers new series of painted photographs each have a tropical feel to them. The imagery used by Bremer for these particular works has been taken from early 20th century glass plate transparencies of the Brazilian Jungle or cities south of the Equator.

Ian Dawsons recent series of cut books continue his ongoing dialogue between psychedelia and space which manifest through the work in a very physical way, with each piece becoming its very own minute cosmos.

Hew Locke who since Miami 2007 has featured in a number of US museum exhibitions, returns with some giant Royal heads. Locke breaks down these famous images and then renders them in his own terms, creating elaborate effigies with a hint of menace, out of modest materials such as cardboard.

Newcomer to the gallery programme Laura Oldfield Ford will be presenting a recent group of related works on paper examining the psycho-geography of the city.

Jane Wilbraham presents her recent series of works that explore the shifting dynamics between globalisation and local, vernacular languages. These large-scale watercolours of dirt and discarded rubbish, interspersed with plant life (leaves, berries, seeds, weeds etc) chart her movements through different locations.

Trevor Appleson, the South African born photographer, will show a series of dynamic works he made with Mexican Wrestlers in 2007. They all feature in his recently published book Los Loss 2008.

Last year Bob and Roberta Smith presented his signature panels with oddball texts to great effect. This year the artist returns with bronze fruit and vegetable sculptures that the artists claims will help to unravel your innermost thoughts.

Finally, Katy Dove, who is well known for her mind bending animations, will present a series of her lesser known abstract paintings on canvas.
