The Visual Force 18th September 7th November 2009 Curated by Dr Slavka Sverakova, The Visual Force is the sixth instalment in the series Collective Histories of Northern Irish Art. Taking Joseph Beuys visit to Belfast, in 1974, as a starting point, Sverakovas exhibition looks at the works of artists across three generations, whose works were in some way landmarks in their field. Twenty-one artists are featured in the exhibition, with works in range of media, including installation, film, photography, painting, drawing and sculpture. Given the ephemeral nature of some of the works chosen by Sverakova, the exhibition will include a mixture of original works and some remade especially for the exhibition. The artists featured in the exhibition are: John Aiken; Vivien Burnside; John Carson; Brian Connolly; Martina Corry; Lynne Davies-Jones; Ciara Finnegan; Adrian Hall; Tony Hill; Ronnie Hughes; Steve Hurst; Sharon Kelly; Fiona Larkin; Alistair MacLennan; Paddy McCann; Moira McIver; Peter Richards; Dan Shipsides; Theo Sims; Una Walker and Charles Walsh. Dr Slavka Sverakova has been an influential member of the Northern Irish arts scene since she moved here in 1975. A former academic, Sverakova currently writes for a number of publications, including Circa and Fortnight. The Visual Force exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated publication with forward by gallery director Peter Richards, and essay by invited curator Dr Slavka Sverakova. in the Project Space 1st October - 18th October : Tst #3 USA Emma Donaldson Tst #3 USA (test number three: USA) is a written account of a train journey across the US that begins in a departure lounge at Gatwick airport and ends a month later on a Seattle City bus. In between are stops at Philadelphia, Washington DC, Denver, Salt Lake City, Portland and Seattle. The text is presented on paper and on the wall and is accompanied by a projected sequence of images taken on the journey. The text (which does not use the first person), tries through ordinary language to probe the detail memory has stored for the time of experience in the city. The aim of Tst #3 USA is to identify why six city linked American episodes retained in memory still continue to impose themselves upon the present. The text seeks to ask if these past episodes now held in the imaginary in any way frame or shape our encounter with the present. Emma Donaldson, born in Belfast, studied Fine Art Painting at Wimbledon School of Art, and at The Royal College of Art. She went on to study Histories and Theories of architecture at the Architectural Association in London. In the recent past, Emma curated Part 1 of Derry?London?London?Derry?, Context Galleries Derry and presented new abstract watercolours at Market Place Theatre, Armagh. Tst #3 USA will be exhibited as part of Pallas Contemporary Projects Open Summer Programme in Dublin, 2010. |
