Sinéad O’Donnell CAUTION 24th August to 29th September @ Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast 31st August to 9th September @ Southbank Centre, London as part of Unlimited Festival Belfast-based artist and curator Sinéad O’Donnell presents the culmination of a two year project commissioned for the Cultural Olympiad to coincide with the London 2012 Paralympics. Over the past two years Sinead has travelled to the USA, Peru, Canada, Kurdistan-Iraq, Japan and Lebanon, working with artists in each of these very different countries on an ambitious collaborative project exploring the nature of ‘invisible’ disability. Sylvette Babin (Montreal, Canada), Mariel Carranza (Los Angeles, USA/Lima, Peru), Paul Couillard (Toronto, Canada), Poshya Kakl (Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq) and Shiro Masuyama (Tokyo, Japan) have been invited by Sinéad to collaborate directly and remotely through a series of meetings, residencies, actions and correspondences taking place across continents. CAUTION has allowed the six artists to explore their limits, break through boundaries and work with the extremes of their abilities to communicate and make things happen. The creative process has been collaborative with each artist building upon ideas generated by previous encounters and Sinéad travelling between them, acting as a catalyst for the gathering of material and the development of the work. The artists will come together for the first time at Golden Thread Gallery in Belfast this August. Featuring solo and collaborative work, the exhibition will be a mix of performance, video and sculptural pieces accompanied by a programme of artist-led talks and events. Cian Smyth, London 2012 Creative Programmer at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, says: “the London 2012 Festival in Northern Ireland is delighted to be working with CAUTION which is giving people the chance to see innovative visual and performance art by artists from around the world and to become involved in the legacy of the London 2012 games.” CAUTION has been commissioned for Unlimited, a series of major commissions celebrating arts, culture and sport by deaf and disabled artists which invites artists to think big and develop projects that they would not otherwise have the resources to create. Unlimited is about artists pushing themselves to reach previously unattained goals and CAUTION was selected from hundreds of applications across the UK.
