SOCIT RALISTE ENOSMERNI SVET / ONE-WAY WORLD / EINBAHNWELT November 9 December 5, 2010 You are cordially invited to the opening of the exhibition on Tuesday, 9 November, at 20.00 in kuc Gallery. Before the opening, we kindly invite you to attend an informal talk with the artists Ferenc Grf and Jean-Baptiste Naudy at 19.00. The mapping and positioning of ideological, geographical and economic borders, with seemingly good intentions, is as always throughout history, still key to the existence and development of all segments of contemporary society. Similar entities which form innocent alliances under the pretence of promoting a better tomorrow set up power relationships and steer our everyday lives into the grasp of their interests. Since ancient times, human relationships have been marred by greed. Religion has turned into religious teaching; and the division of labour into hierarchical concepts of superior and subordinate, while interpersonal relationships have been transformed into an ideology and consequently the basic unit of a cultural construct, through which the entities falsely display the disparate ways their interests take. In reality, the world is rushing only in one direction, governed by the most powerful individuals the direction of modern global capitalism. This reality provided the impetus for the research of the Socit Raliste cooperative, which began in 2008, focusing on different conditions of our physical environment and its influence on the perception of individuals, who inevitably adapt to leading geopolitical or economic ideologies. Every day, without realising it, we carry these ideologies in our wallets, immerse ourselves in them when reading the newspapers, copy their images from TV screens, and become their promoters at Sunday football matches. And last, but not least, we encounter them in every aspect of art: museums, galleries, the art market, individual works and theories. Realising the omnipresence of false ideologies and protesting against them provided the vantage point for the exhibition by Socit Raliste in kuc Gallery. This time, the observation, recognition and examination of ideologies which the group have done over the years culminated in an art work entitled The Fountainhead, which is the focal point of the exhibition. The film is their first feature, and offers a re-reading of the eponymous film classic from 1949 directed by King Vidor which was based on the novel The Fountainhead by the American-Russian author and philosopher Ayn Rand, a proponent of American libertarianism and the freedom of the individual self in all social systems. She wholeheartedly opposed different models of collective values and unconditionally believed in rational self-interest, promoting economic prosperity based on free markets. Therefore, she is considered one of the staunchest promoters of modern capitalism, who also created a philosophy called objectivism. With minimal intervention into Vidors film, Socit Raliste creates a total destruction of social conventions, revealing the background and basic principle of American state-forming art and the emergence of an ideology based on the relationship between capitalism and the doctrines of high modernism. This disarmament of ideology provides the basis for a further reading of the One-way World exhibition, where the cooperative seeks to reveal different tools used by ideologies for existence and dominance, and completely deconstructs them with minimal interventions, thereby displaying the false reality of ideologies. The first tools are typography and fonts, which may seem like an innocent social agreement, but in reality are the first and most dangerous harbinger of ideology on the streets, in shops, schools, on monuments, food products, money, in love letters and poems in every aspect of life. Visual manipulations used daily for their own propaganda - which is portrayed as reality - are no less present or aggressive. At the same time, the exhibition One-way World seeks to revise generally accepted geographic, economic, political and graphic symbols, which are uniquely transformed into their anti-symbols, creating anarchy. The art works and graphic and visual interventions of Socit Raliste completely disarm us, push us into a corner, and incessantly, like a perpetuum mobile, question the reality of social mechanisms and ideologies. Due to conformity and numbness, the individuals stance and beliefs are increasingly determined by the stance and beliefs of the social code, which is the result of unconscious influence or direct social pressure. Increasingly, individuals passively adapt to the social environment and dominant values which shape them for personal comfort or personal gain. Therefore, One-way World is primarily about stopping for a moment, raising awareness about the devastated everyday world, and drawing attention to deceitful economic and geopolitical constructs. A transfer from pleasure to displeasure. Curator: Tev Logar Guided tours of the exhibition will take place on Wednesday, 17 November, and Friday, 3 December, at 18.00. |
