Juni 2010, 19�21 Uhr Elger Esser Elger Essers gro�formatige Landschaftsfotografien sind leise Momentaufnahmen vermeintlich vergangener Epochen. Die Zeit scheint still zu stehen, der Betrachter verweilt in tr�umerischen, melancholischen Landschaften. Losgel�st von Ort und Zeit rufen die Szenerien mit Br�cken, St�dten und Meeresk�sten vage Erinnerungen und Tagtr�umereien wach. Wasser, Licht und Architektur verschmelzen zu einer untrennbaren Einheit. Die lyrische, stimmungsvolle Bildsprache und der den klassischen Kompositionsregeln folgende Bildaufbau vermitteln einen harmonischen Gesamteindruck. Die hellen, zarten Farben unterst�tzen den Eindruck, es handelt sich um Erlebtes, Vergangenes. Die Idee der Erinnerung wird ebenso in Elger Essers j�ngst entstandener Heliograv�re-Serie Combray aufgegriffen. Die Heliograv�re (von griech. helios=Sonne, Lichtdrucktechnik), ein fast vergessenes Edeldruckverfahren, wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erfunden und zeichnet sich durch ausdrucksstarke Bildtiefe und detailgenaue Grauabstufungen aus. Die mit Combray betitelte Serie bezieht sich auf den gleichnamigen fiktiven Ort aus dem Romanzyklus Auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit von Marcel Proust, der sich mit Kindheits- und Jugenderinnerungen besch�ftigt; die beschriebenen �rtlichkeiten vermag man in Elger Essers Bildern wiedererkennen. Elger Esser wurde 1967 in Stuttgart geboren und wuchs in Rom auf. Heute lebt und arbeitet er in D�sseldorf. Als einer der letzten und j�ngsten Absolventen der ber�hmten Klasse von Bernd und Hilla Becher an der D�sseldorfer Kunstakademie geh�rt er zu den wichtigsten deutschen Fotok�nstlern. Bei Bildfindung und Bildentwicklung vertraut er noch den herk�mmlichen analogen Fototechniken. Das Kunstmuseum Stuttgart zeigte 2009/2010 die gro�e Retrospektive Eigenzeit. Pamela Rosenkranz - Tim Lee - Rodney Graham Im Erdgeschoss der Galerie R�diger Sch�ttle sind drei weitere K�nstlerpositionen zu sehen: Schl�sselwerke vergangener Ausstellungen treten hier in Dialog mit einer neuen K�nstlerposition. Anl�sslich seiner aktuellen Ausstellung Through the Forest im Museum f�r Gegenwartskunst Basel (13. Juni bis 26. September 2010) wird Rodney Grahams Leuchtkastenarbeit Potatoes Blocking my Studiodoor, 2006 gezeigt, die im Kontext der Performance �Lobbing Potatoes at a gong� (1969), 2006 zu verstehen ist. Der 1949 in Kanada geborene K�nstler arbeitet in den Bereichen Film, Fotografie, Malerei, Installation, Literatur und Musik und verbindet mit ironischem Blick, Raffinesse und konzeptueller Originalit�t die unterschiedlichsten Ebenen des Alltags und der Kulturgeschichte. Der 1975 in Korea geborene K�nstler Tim Lee, der heute in Vancouver lebt und arbeitet, beendete k�rzlich sein einj�hriges DAAD Stipendium in Berlin. Sein Deutschlandaufenthalt wurde abgeschossen durch eine Einzelausstellung in der Arthur Boskamp Stiftung in Hohenlockstedt. Mittels Umkehrung, Verdrehung, Verdoppelung, Spaltung und K�rzung verdichtet und kombiniert der K�nstler allgemeine Begriffe wie Nationalismus, ethnische Zugeh�rigkeit, Kunstgeschichte und regionale Volkskultur in unterschiedlichen Medien und bringt uns dazu, sie in neuem Licht zu betrachten. Dieser zweite Blick l�sst uns vielleicht nicht nur die formellen Aspekte dessen, was wir sehen, �berdenken, sondern auch die sozialen und kulturellen Bedingungen, die sich jeweils dahinter verbergen. In der Galerie R�diger Sch�ttle erstmals ausstellen wird die 1979 in der Schweiz geborene K�nstlerin Pamela Rosenkranz. Der menschliche K�rper ist ein zentrales Motiv ihrer Arbeiten, obgleich er, trotz seiner physischen Abwesenheit, im Detail zum Vorschein kommt. Die Arbeit As One, 2010 lebensgro� geformt aus transparentem, geh�rtetem Kunststoff, wurde mit hautfarbe nem Acryl gestisch bemalt �unweigerlich f�hlt man sich an deformierte K�rper und Verwundungen erinnert. Eine Wandarbeit mit ebenso bemalter, aufgezogener Spandex-Haut erg�nzt die Skulptur. Bis 15. August 2010 sind Arbeiten der K�nstlerin in der Ausstellung OF OBJECTS, FIELDS, AND MIRRORS im Kunsthaus Glarus, Schweiz, zu sehen. Time stands still and the viewer�s gaze dwells in dreamlike, melancholic landscapes. Detached from both time and place, these scenes of bridges, riverside towns and seacoasts awaken vague memories and daydreams. Water, light and architecture merge into one complete whole. The lyrical pictorial language, full of atmosphere and governed by the classical rules of composition, conveys an overall impression of perfect harmony. The pale, delicate colours heighten the impression of being transported into the past. The theme of memory also runs like a thread through Elger Esser�s recently produced series of photo-engravings entitled Combray. Photo-engraving, now an almost forgotten photomechanical reproduction process, was invented towards the end of the 19th century and is distingished primarily by its outstanding image depth and accuracy of tonal value. The Combray series takes its title from the fictitious town of the same name in Marcel Proust�s In Search of Lost Time, which has memories of childhood and youth as its theme. The places described by Proust in his novel are recognizable in Elger Esser�s photo-engravings. Elger Esser was born in Stuttgart in 1967 and grew up in Rome. Today he lives and works in D�sseldorf. As one of the last and youngest students to graduate from the famous art photography class of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the D�sseldorf Art Academy, Elger Esser counts among the most important German artists of the present day. And despite his contemporary status as an artist, he still relies on the traditional analogue techniques for both the taking and the processing of his images. The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart showed his large retrospective exhibition Eigenzeit (Own Time) in 2009/2010. Pamela Rosenkranz - Tim Lee - Rodney Graham A confrontation between the works of three other artists will be taking place on the ground floor of the R�diger Sch�ttle Gallery: key works from past exhibitions will be entering into a dialogue with a new arrival. Concurrently with his exhibition Through the Forest at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Basel (13th June to 26th September 2010), the R�diger Sch�ttle Gallery will be showing Rodney Graham�s lightbox piece Potatoes Blocking my Studio Door, 2006, which is meant to be seen within the context of the artist�s performance �Lobbing Potatoes at a Gong� (1969), 2006. Born in Canada in 1949, the artist works in the media of film, photography, painting, installation, literature and music. Operating with a healthy mixture of visual irony, subtlety of expression and conceptual originality, Rodney Graham combines the most diverse levels of everyday life and cultural history. Born in Korea in 1975 and today living and working in Vancouver, Tim Lee recently completed his DAAD scholarship in Berlin, celebrating the end of his stay in Germany with a solo exhibition at the Arthur Boskamp Foundation in Hohenlockstedt. Implementing the strategies of flipping, spinning, doubling, splitting and cropping, Tim Lee conflates and combines such general notions as nationalism, ethnicity, art history and vernacular culture across various media, causing us to see them in a completely new light, for this double-take effect makes us reconsider not only the formal terms but also the social and cultural terms of what we are looking at. The artist Pamela Rosenkranz, born in Switzerland in 1979, will be exhibiting at the R�diger Sch�ttle Gallery for the very first time. Whilst it is never present physically, the human body in detail is the central theme of her work. Looking at her sculpture entitled As One, 2010, formed in life-size proportions from transparent, hardened plastic and painted gesturally in flesh-coloured acrylic paint, one cannot help thinking of physical deformity or injury. The sculpture is complemented by a wall piece likewise featuring a taut, painted skin of Spandex. The artist�s works are also on view until 15th August in the exhibition OF OBJECTS, FIELDS, AND MIRRORS at the Kunsthaus in Glarus, Switzerland. Pamela Rosenkranz lives and works in Z�rich. |
