Positions on Conceptual Art Giovanni Anselmo, Robert Barry, Martin Boyce,Daniel Buren, Martin Creed, Ludger Gerdes,Liam Gillick, Jack Goldstein, Dan Graham,Rodney Graham, Douglas Huebler, On Kawara,John Knight, Joseph Kosuth, Jiri Kovanda,Sol LeWitt, Goshka Macuga, Richard Nonas,Pamela Rosenkranz, Ian Wilson, Lawrence Weiner 03 Februar 2012 – 17 März 2012 Eröffnung: Donnerstag, 02 Februar 2012, 19–21 Uhr Positions on Conceptual Art Die Bezeichnung Concept Art ist erstmalig Anfang der 1960er Jahre im US-amerikanischen Kontext auf Kunst angewandt worden, deren eigentliches Merkmal die Sprache ist. Sol LeWitt prägte durch seine Texte die Bezeichnung Conceptual Art, die seitdem für eine Kunstrichtung steht, in der das Konzept, die Idee des Kunstwerks, vorrangig ist. Die Ausführung des Kunstwerks spielt eine untergeordnete Rolle und muß nicht zwingend durch den Künstler selbst erfolgen. Oft treten Modelle, Skizzen, Schriften und Anleitungstexte an die Stelle des ausgeführten, somit entmaterialisierten Werkes.Der Betrachter wird veranlasst, sich mit dem Künstler und seinem Denken auseinander zusetzen. Ein Schwerpunkt der Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle liegt seit den 1970er Jahre in der Vermittlung konzeptueller Kunst. In der Ausstellung Positions on Conceptual Art wird nun dieser Kerngedanke der Galerietätigkeit aufgegriffen. Es werden sowohl Kunstwerke der prägenden, ersten Künstlergeneration wie etwa Robert Barry, Dan Graham, Douglas Huebler, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Lawrence Weiner, als auch bedeutende konzeptuelle Positionen der nachfolgenden Generationen wie Martin Boyce, Martin Creed, Liam Gillick, Goshka Macuga u.a. gezeigt. Damit soll nicht nur ein wichtiger Punkt des Galerieprogrammes über die Jahre hinweg beleuchtet, sondern vor allem auf die fortwährende, zentrale Bedeutung konzeptueller Kunst verwiesen werden. Neuigkeiten Anri Sala vertritt Frankreich bei der 55. Biennale Venedig, Juni 2013. Wir möchten weiter auf zwei besondere Einzelausstellungen im Haus der Kunst München hinweisen: Wilhelm Sasnal: 03.02. – 13.05.2012 Thomas Ruff: 17.02. – 20.05.2012 Der Kunstverein München zeigt ab dem 18. Februar 2012 Werke des niederländischen Künstlers Willem de Rooij. - Positions on Conceptual Art The term Concept Art was first used at the beginning of the 1960s in the context of American modern art for the kind of art that essentially operates with language to express an idea. One of its chief exponents was the American artist Sol LeWitt, whose use of texts in his work led to the widespread use of the term Conceptual Art to describe an art movement for which the idea, the concept, is more important than the work itself. Indeed, the execution of the artwork is subordinate to the idea and need not even be undertaken by the artist himself. In many cases the work merely consists of models, sketches, texts and instructions in lieu of the actually executed artwork, thus transcending the work’s physical, material presence still further.Consequently, with little else to distract him, the viewer’s attention focuses on the artist himself and his thoughts and ideas.The communication of Conceptual Art has been one of the main activities of the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery since the 1970s. Thus it is that the exhibition Positions on Conceptual Art now takes up one of the gallery’s fundamental objectives. It will show not only works by the leading exponents of the first generation, such as Robert Barry, Dan Graham, Douglas Huebler, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Lawrence Weiner, but also works by important Conceptualists of the following generations, including Martin Boyce, Martin Creed, Liam Gillick and Goshka Macuga, to name only a few.Besides illuminating a longstanding aspect of the gallery’s activities, the exhibition’s main objective is to highlight the enduring and central significance of Conceptual Art within the context of contemporary art and its history. News Anri Sala will represent France at the next biennial Venice, June 2013.
